  1. Hi all, Avid A7RII user here - but trying to find a lens solution for a current project. I am looking for a not huge, fixed telephoto lens somewhere in the 120-150 range - preferably a 135. Curious as to what good options would be? I can't seem to find much of anything, which is frustrating, and thought there might be some good user experience here? My biggest concerns are the size/weight of the lens and IQ. I walk miles with my camera, and weight is important. It's why I got the Sony. Right now I usually use the Contax G 90mm 2.8 with the converter, and it is a fantastic size/IQ combination for what I am shooting - but even this wonderful, older lens has its' limits on the Sony sensor, so I'd like to not get any worse in terms of IQ, but it's too short for some of the work I need to do. Aperture is not a big concern - an f/4 lens could work. Manual focus is not a big deal but if this comes on an older lens that renders colors like an older lens I can't have it for what I'm shooting. The Contax G lenses are as old as I can get an even that 90 renders colors not *quite* as well as the 55 I have, which makes the images harder to use in continuity. Budget is also not really a concern, unless we're getting like, over $2k. (I would like to spend less but if I can find the right tool I will pay for it). I know I'm spoiled with the size of the 90 though. I've seen some off brands like Rokinon etc but should I trust them? My gear knowledge has it's limits and I usually stick to native brands or Zeiss glass. Never really trusted those other ones but maybe they are better these days? Last time I looked seriously into a third party lens was the sigmas back in like 2007 for my Nikons - I don't buy a whole lot of gear.
  2. My sony fe 70-200 g lens which I've been using with great pleasure for the last year, has separated into two parts right behind the focus ring as I was taking it out of my bag, without any external physical force. Made a quick research and found similar cases like mine. They used plastic parts inside and the lens probably cannot carry its own weight. Probably doesn't happen too often but did happen to me. It was my favorite lens and I was just abought to buy the new Sony FE 70-200 G f.2.8. My question is: Does anybody know if the f.2.8 version uses the same plastic components inside or did they use stronger materials for this one? I know optical quality is higher, but how about these fragile parts of F4? Are they replaced with stronger ones as well? Thanks.
  3. Could anybody please tell me if this lens Sigma 73A205 150-500 F/5-6.3 APO HSM DG Telephoto Zoom lens will fit the Sony A6000 camera? I would like to get a long telephoto lens for birding. Any recommendations on other lenses with maximum reach of at least 400mm that fit my a6000 camera? Cheers Roman
  4. Tested the new GM FE100400 lens on my A7RM2 today with a quality printed color and B&W target. The GM100400 is an excellent sharp lens at f6.7 and outstanding at f8 and f11. Wide open (f5.6) at 400mm it is quite good but some blurring of 2 & 3 point type is seen. At f8 2 point type is SHARP at 400 mm and almost equally sharp at 560 mm and f8-11 with the Sony 1.4X TC. The 100-400mm lens even operates reasonably well at 800mm with the Sony 2X TC, where 3 point type is fairly good and 6 point type is sharp. Of course contrast is lowered with the TC’s but not significantly for the 1.4X TC. No chromatic aberration was noted with this lens. I compared the GM 100400 with my (generation 1, 2014) Tamron 150-600mm lens. With a Sigma 2X TC at 720mm, 3 point type was good and 5 point type reasonably sharp. Without TC, at 600mm the Tamron is known to be much less than optimal and in this comparison test that proved to be the case: at 600mm very good type had to be 5-6 point type and even larger type could not be said to be truly sharp. Plus all tests required chromatic correction with the TAMRON lens. I did not test tonight at 500mm with the TAMRON, which should give better results than the 720mm using the 2X TC. In each test I moved the tripod so as to fill the frame with the target, so there is no correction needed for distance.
  5. I need a recommendation for a telephoto prime for my NEX 7 to photograph the total eclipse of the Sun on August 21, 2017. I think a prime is better than a zoom because I should get better IQ at a lower cost. Bokeh is not a consideration since there will be nothing in the background. A slow lens (say, even f/8) is OK as the camera will be tripod mounted and the sun's corona will still permit a fast shutter speed. I photographed the partial eclipse of May 20, 2012, and the transit of Venus on June 5, 2012, with my SEL18200 and a Thousand Oaks Optical solar filter. Of course, no filter will be needed during totality. Based on the size of the Sun's disk on those images, I think that I need a longer lens than 200mm - probably 400mm to 500mm. I appreciate your ideas.
  6. I am interested in a telephoto around this price range, will the sony version fit, do I need an adapter, etc? Of course if anyone has any better recommendations, MUCH appreciated http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CYEA34/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1P9QRDRYY6FXL I am also hoping someone might know of a decent flash, preferably under 200 that works well with the device and does not need much programming
  7. The 180mm Nikkor f/2.8 is a very sharp lens, and not that big, if you see one come up cheaply on eBay. This Wedge-Tailed Eagle was captured at Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria, Australia with an NEX-6 and was used as a fold-out poster for the Melbourne Zoo magazine.
  8. Many wildlife shooters overlook the small E 55-210mm F4.5-6.3 OSS lens. On an APS-C lens it has an equivalent focal length of 315mm and is surprisingly sharp. Matched with a 24 Megapixel sensor it also captures files that can be cropped generously to frame tight. I have posted a Flickr gallery of images captured with this pocket rocket: https://www.flickr.com/photos/markgaler/sets/72157651634812438/

  10. Hello everyone, Background : I have a persistent problem with my Sony 55-200, since some weeks ago the auto-focus stopped working. AF works with my 18-55 mm and my 50 mm on this camera, the only lens having this problem is the 55-200. Problem : The AF doesn't work but the lens motor moves and it seems it is trying to focus with no success :/. It goes like that non-stop, even after 5 minutes impossible to focus. I use the lens on MF and it works perfectly, although, in some cases I'd really like to have the AF. You can find the video on this post. Do you have any thought about this problem? Could it be the motor built-in? Can I do something myself to repair it? I could bring the camera somewhere to repair but I am not willing to pay a lot as it is a cheap camera nowadays. Thanks in advance.
