Long story short I switched from the Nikon D800 to the Sony a7ii when I get to used it in person and see how good it is and remind me of the good old day of photography.

Since I'm a poor soul and can't afford the Zeiss 85 1.8 so I went with the Rokinon 85 1.4 manual focus to see what is all the buzz is about.

Went out a did this portrait yesterday and this is by far one of my very best photoshoot. All shot were taken between f2 to f3.5 since trying to focus manually with f1.4 is almost impossible.

Enjoy.

Hi,  I Iooked at your photos on Flick, and they are technically impressive even at maximum size. And then that girl....... Superb pictures overall.

I bought the Batis 85mm a few weeks ago and sold my manual equivalent a few days ago. For about 20% of the price of the Batis.

When I used the manual lens to take photos like the ones you show, I needed a tripod to get focus dot-on. As you say, Batis is very expensive, but with it you get AF (with FaceRecognition and EyeFocus, if you want it) and the Optical Stabilisation. I also like to see what aperture I used (shown in data Exif Data) when I analyse my pictures, and this is generally not possible with MF lenses, unless used with non standard adapters.

With regard to optical quality, there a many excellent manual lenses for a fraction of the price of a Batis, as you have shown.

Thanks for the comment man.

I didn't need to use the tripod but the photoshoot does go a lot slower since I need to magnify 80% of the time so make sure myou focus is spot on. Honestly, it was as bad as I expected to be since I never used a manual lens and most of my photography life I lived with the Holy trinity Nikkor 14-24-70-200 which focus faster that I can compose haha.

In about 50% of the time though with the peaking focus, as long as I need it in the eyes then my focus is spot on.

One thing I would say as the downside is u don't get Exif data so sometimes I do wonder what aperture I shot it in........ $269....what else can I ask for lol.

    • For modern lens design, this is totally normal behaviour. To minimize size and weight of the lens and to improve many optical aspects, compromises are made in areas where the image can be corrected digitally. Distortion is one of these compromises: heavy barrel distortion is very common at the wide end of the focal range, up to a point where the corners of the sensor are not even covered by the projected image (i.e. rendered black). This is fixed by applying the proper distortion correction in your RAW editor: the black corners are stretched to a point beyond the image crop. Any leftover vignetting is then also digitally corrected. All this is done in-camera when processing a JPEG image, which is why it only shows up in RAW files. 2. Yes, these black corners are a property of the lens, not of the camera.
    • Hi Guys, I was shooting some flowers today. when I checked the images back home, I found out that all images in RAW format with 18mm focal length had heavy image distortion and were black-cornered. I wonder if this is the same case for you guys? If so,  is this issue solvable? if so, how did you guys solve it? 2. can I still use any focal length that's larger than 18mm( ex. 16mm) on this camera body?     Note: Len is Sony's 18-135mm OSS only images that had a focal length of 18mm had this problem only in RAW format. the same image in Jpeg did not get affected   Here are some sample images for your reference: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10-I9wUBPo9KT-aaW7Fhtx2v9WCnJ3vbT/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/10-I9wUBPo9KT-aaW7Fhtx2v9WCnJ3vbT/view?usp=sharing
    • Check the contents of this forum, that subject has been covered many times.  If you are looking for adapters with best AF functionality, Sony's own offerings is probably your best choice.
