Sony 28mm f2 Slow AF issues

I've had my 28mm for just over a month now and I'm having some pretty bad issues with focusing.

 

At first it seemed that the issues were only in low light, but I was just out in broad daylight and I found that the AF would just hunt, or not respond at all at some points. Taking many attempts to focus properly. Has anyone else came across these issues? None of my other lenses have this issue. I'm wondering if I got a bad copy or something.

So when you're in a situation where the 28mm hunts, and you change lenses, the new lens does not hunt in the exact same situation?

correct. All of my other lenses in the same situations AF quickly and easily, unless I'm in extremely low light.

For what it's worth, I have exactly the same issue with my kit 2870 lens on my A7Mkii.  Sometimes ti hunts and fails to lock on.  Sometimes it doesn't even try to hunt - it just refuses to take a photo.  And yet my legacy lenses all work without any problem.
