Cleaning the New SteadyShot Sensor

Recommended Posts

I learned a few years ago that cleaning (with a wet swab) the sensor on the Olympus OM-D was tricky (if not risky) because of the IBIS (Oly's version of the SteadyShot system) and it implementation by moving the sensor.

Has anyone encountered this issue or warnings about this concern?

So Jamil, I just read about the Zeeion blower and the Flexodome accessory.  It looks sort of kooky, but the real test is how well it perfomes.  So, how well does it perfrom?  At $80 it's not all that expensive if you have to use it a lot (and maybe even if you don't).

Now I wanna go see what this other gizmo (the Architect Flutterby) you wrote about is/does...

I answered your question here:  http://www.sonyalphaforum.com/topic/1438-a7r-ii-initial-impressionsissues/?p=9096

And no, I don't have the weirdo Flexodome thing.  That is new, but I guess seems like a good idea.

I have an older version of this kit with the older zeeion blower style:  http://www.visibledust.com/products3.php?pid=710

iFixit posted a teardown, including the SteadShot system: https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Sony+a7R+II+Teardown/45597

I'm not entirely sold on the Zeeion blower or other electrostatic systems on sensors due to their ESD characteristics. Read the most useful negative review here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/609036-REG/Visible_Dust_5068290_Zeeion_Blower_Sensor_Cleaner.html . Also not thrilled with the customer reviews on the Artic Butterfly.

Don't want to damage either the IBIS or sensor/processor with static... but as far as wet cleaning goes, I noticed this on page 97 of the A7RII manual: "[Anti-Dust] System: Charge protection coating on image sensor and image sensor shift mechanism" - this sounds like the coating that Olympus has on their sensors that is sensitive to liquid cleaning and needs to be re-applied after a sensor clean.
