  1. Hi there, I'm asking myself some questions about compression in the sony a7s II's various recording formats and maybe some of you know the answer. I tried to calculate the mean size of a pixel in the different formats to compare the compression between formats that don't have the same resolution: 4k 30p 100Mbps : 3.33 Mb per image = 0.40 bits per pixel (on average, obviously) 24p 100Mbps : 4.17 Mb per image = 0.50 bits per pixel HD 24p 50Mbps : 2.08 Mb per image = 1.00 bit per pixel 30p 50Mbps : 1.67 Mb per image = 0.80 bit per pixel 60p 50Mbps : 0.83 Mb per image = 0.40 bit per pixel 120p 100Mbps : 0.83 Mb per image = 0.40 bit per pixel Is 4K 24p actually 80Mbps to have the same image quality as 4K 30p, or is it true 100Mbps an thus produce less compressed images.. Same question for 24 and 30p 50Mbps HD. If 24p 50Mbps HD is actually 50Mbps, it means it's the format with the least compression with over 1bit per pixel on average. If the limiting factor of the camera is recording a data stream of 100Mbps max, why are there no HD 24/30/60p 100Mbps mode for better IQ ? Is it to keep consistency over compression levels across the various framerates even if it means sub optimal IQ ? But then the 4K 24p should be 80Mbps to fit the 30p compression ? 100Mps for all the different res/framerate combinations would allow the 60p to be better quality than the 120p, as it should, and also allow an even lower compression 24p mode (with over 2 bits per pixel) This would come in handy for specific shots where you'd want low compression over high resolution. Or am I just talking nonsense ? Cheers.
  2. Hey guys, Ive had the A7S II for a couple of days now and shot a Sculpture-by-the-Sea even in Sydney. I used the 35mm F2.8... First video of it's kinf for me. I had a couple of tricky bits to handle. I had the build in stabilization on 35mm and was shooting in FHD 100fps. Some of the clips came out a bit more shaky than I expected so I stabilized them in post. When I switched to my Canon 16-35 with the Metabones Speedbooster, they looked a bit better. Maybe I should have set it to Auto? Anyways. I enjoyed the shoot a lot and Im looking forward to more... Comments and Critics are very welcome... as well as tips for compositing and editing. Cheers
  3. Hey Sony Alpha community, I am planning a landscape timelapse project in British Columbia for this summer and I have a Sony Alpha 7S II. I know that all the good landscape photographers out there use the A7R II or a camera with similar resolution for landscape photography. In my case, though, I will export a 4K video file for which my 4240 × 2832 still image size of the A7S II should be enough. I will not print my photos in large formats like most landscape photographers. So my question is, how important is the resolution of my camera when shooting a 4K timelapse video? What is the difference in the final image quality when exporting a 4240 × 2832 (A7S II) image file in 4K compared to exporting a 7952 x 5304 (A7R II) image file in 4K? What really matters is the resolution of your export, or am I wrong? Of course I understand that using a A7S II over an A7R II will limit my ability to crop in the image while still keeping enough resolution. I hope you guys understand my problem and can help me. Cheers, Flo
  4. Hi I'm looking for advice on the best audio options for the Sony a7s ii. I film mainly documentary style footage and more corporate interview style films. At the moment I am either thinking of getting: 1. Sennheiser radio mics, Zoom h4n and then a Rode top mic for natural sound. I've use Sennhesier and the Zoom before and it works well but it's more of a hassle to record it all separately and sync. OR 2. The Sony K2M kit, which comes with a top mic. This seems like a more hassle free option as I can put it on top of my camera, but I don't know how good the quality is recording into the camera. (Or whether it's any better than the Rode top mic which is way cheaper!) Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Or any other suggestions for options I should look into? Thanks
  5. I recently got myself the 18-105 G master lens for my A7s ii. For documentaries it will do so well. HOWEVER. I do have one major issue with it. I film everything in 4k. The lenses I've been using are not Full Frame lenses. My workaround has been ‘Zoom Setting: ‘On: ClearImage Zoom’’ This allows me to punch in just enough to crop out the vignette. This lets me use any lenses I want and still film in 4K. How to enable this option: The 18-105 disables this option sadly. And now I’m left with this horrible vignetting. It does however add this feature to itself which I find VERY odd. Once you zoom in to the 105mm mark, it then uses the Clear Image zoom. I want the reverse. Clear image zoom at x1.4 and then the Lens. Is there a way to fix this or am I stuck with this?
  6. Hello, Is there a way to playback the slow motion on the camera? Right now when I'm shooting in 120fps when I playback the video it shows in real time and not slow motion Thanks!
  7. testing the slow motion capability of the new sony A7s mark ii at 100fps full hd 100mb with the rokinon 50mm T1.5 cine lens in PP8 <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Tl7lksnCrUY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
