Camera Bag for A7R II+Battery Grip with Sony 24-70 GM and Sony/Zeiss 16-35 f4

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a good camera bag (shoulder bag only) that can carry the following:

1. Sony A7R II with Battery Grip and Sony 24/70 f2.8GM mounted.

2. Additional Sony/Zeiss 16-35mm f4 Lens

3. Two Extra Sony Batteries

4. Watson Dual Battery Charger

5. Extra SDXC Memory Card and Memory Card Reader

6. Lenspen and Cleaning Spray/Cloth

7.  Additional small items, such as user manual, filters, etc.

In addition, it would be helpful to have a a pocket to store an iPad, but not a dealbreaker.

I currently have the Lowepro Adventura 170, but it baaaarely fits the 16-35mm lens in the extra available space to the side of the camera, and it does not really fit the 24-70 in the side space if I decide to keep the 16-35mm mounted instead.  Surprisingly, it does fit the Camera with 24-70 mounted height-wise.  In other words, it is just not wide enough.

I was thinking about getting the Think Tank Speed Racer, but not sure if that is possibly overkill.  I don't want something that will have tons of extra space and allow my gear to move around.

Any other ideas that might fit my gear?

Thanks for any help/ideas.

Above linked bag came with my Nikon kit.

The kit has a bulky 10X zoom [77mm front],

charger, 2 batteries, large "gorilla pod", and

some other stuff. There's room for another

lens, a few more small items, and a 15" PC.

Sometimes kits come with rather dubious

bags, but this one is a quality item. Also, it

has a very light gray interior. If you've ever

tried to find a small item in a dark shaded

interior, especially in a dimly lit room, then

you know that a light interior is important.

And, the "Nikon" logo on the front is rather

small and discreet. You won't be a walking

Nikon advert :-)

Just realized I forgot to say that the point of my recommendation

is that a Nikon FX is about the same bulk as an a7X-XX with grip.

BTW I do hear ya about having enuf room but not so much that all

your stuff wanders around loose in the bag :-( Having been at this

since just after the pyramids were built, I've wound up with a really

huge collection of bags, so no matter what assemblage of gear is

gonna go out the door, there's a "Goldilocks" bag for exactly that.

Interesting idea...never thought about the possibility of a branded bag. Thanks for the recommendation and will check it out.

I was wondering about the size of a gripped A7R II vs a DSLR. I assume that since the sony is smaller, adding the battery grip makes it similar to a regular DSLR, and it would still be much smaller than a DSLR with a battery grip.

With a grip, an a7XX is just a bit bigger than a "naked" SLR, but

that is a variable. A Nikon 810 is taller than my Nikon 610, which

would matter noticeably if you were looking for a rather compact

case for a minimal kit. But, since your collection of gear requires

a fairly sizable bag, such bag will easily bulge out just slightly, so

it's no problem if a gripped Sony is a bit taller than a naked Nikon.

FWIW, back in the film era, before built-in film motors, when you

added an external film winding motor the camera got taller, same

as with today's battery grips. What I found back then was that the

bags that best fitted motor-added 35mm SLR gear were the bags

marketed as "medium format bags" ... not that I can suggest any

particular bag today ... but that may be a useful thought. Back in

the day of motor-added 35mm SLRs the SLR lenses were smaller

than, for instance, Hasselblad or Bronica SLR lenses. But TODAY

SLR lenses are approximately the size of those old 'Blad lenses.

Over the years I am having the "holy-gral-camera-bag" journey going on.

I can assure you - it is not existing.

I would recommend to go for one of either ThinkTank, Tenba or LowePro.

For your list I would suggest to have a closer look at the Tenba Messenger DNA 13 or 15. I have both and they are my favorites since a year now.

Billingham Hadley Pro works well.

    • I'd opt for a small zoom, but I must admit that there seems to be a dearth of lenses in the e-mount in the 24-50mm range -- for some reason.  I have a small 24-70mm, but that's an a-mount Tamron.  Maybe you can find something by looking at lenses slightly longer.  I have a heavy, but small 24-100mm a-mount, and Tokina made a 24-200mm a-mount.  Maybe there are similar lenses in the e-mount.  Kill three birds with one stone.
    • I recently got an a7cii and to pair with the compact body, I thought of getting 2 of the trio compact lenses, 24mm F2.8 and 40mm F4.0. (I already have a 70-200mm) However I stumbled upon the newly released 24-50mm F2.8 G. I'm not sure which to get - I like the small factor of the prime lenses ON the body because it's discreet and helps me blend in as an average tourist / doesn't make it obvious when doing street. But if I add the dimensions of the 2 primes together, it takes up more space in the bag than the zoom lens. BUT THEN, the weight of the 2 prime lenses is 110g lesser than the zoom lens. The zoom lens has the added benefit of being more versatile.   So now I'm stumped. Each has their pros and cons and I can't decide which to get. I'd like to hear the views of you guys who are more experts at this.   Edit: I'm a bit concerned about weight because the last time I went overseas my shoulders were aching from carrying too much. Which is why I was looking for small compact primes in the first place.
    • Hi, I have got a6300 which shutter stopped working. I managed to change shutter but unfortunatelly broke shutter motor tape but I fixed that. After repair the shutter is working but not in a proper way, watch with sound. I bought the second shutter and tried to test it before dissaembling again and it doesn't react to magnet but it works fine when I apply 3V. Are there different type of shutter for a6000 - a6400? Back to the question what is wrong with my shutter after first repair? I don't want to put next shutter unfoundedly. Do your sony cameras perform such a self-check after start up?  IMG_5579 (1).webm
