Best image library and image editor software for A7R2 raw images

Recommended Posts

Hi I am a proud owner of a Sony A7R2 and it works perfect for me.

However I have Adobe elements 13 and that program does not recognize the raw images. I have to upgrade to 14 and when I have to upgrade anyway I am looking for recommendations for a good program.

Does Sony have a editing go photo library program?

Best regards

Gisle

There should be a Capture One version free for Sony owners. Give it a try, many people swear for this software and as a raw converter is one of the best around.

Alternatively you could buy Lightroom 6 (the standalone version) or CC (the pay-montly version).

It's mostly a matter of personal preference; for example I can't stand Capture One, but I've used Lightroom since version 2 so I'm pretty used to it.

I have the A7sii and PS6. This also does not recognise the RAW files. You have 2 options.

1. Get the free capture one for sony program - gets rave reviews, but I find PS6 better for RAW processing. Just a personal choice, maybe as I have used it for so long. I find Adobe camera raws noise control better.

2. So how do I use PS or PSE12 with the RAW files? Adobe DNG converter (free). This converts the camera specific RAW files into dng files - basically digital negatives with all the image info the RAW had. You can edit these files in the camera raw from adobe with ease. They are extremely similar to the original raws and have all the image info so you can push and manipulate the image as you would with raw.

BTW, the A7R II of the OP is listed as a supported camera for PS CS6 on the Adobe website.

Since I have Nikon also, I have the full C1 Pro version.  Tried Sony Express version and found it completely inadequate, including not supporting two monitors.  I was moving over from Aperture so needed something that came close in workflow.

Had LR while it was beta, and recently subscribed to Adobe CC with LR and played with it for a while.  Simply did not like the workflow of LR.  Thought it was a matter of getting used to it but in the end, it became a hinderance so I tried C1.

Not completely happy with C1 but its lot better than LR for me.  I know others have sworn by LR.

  • 3 weeks later...

i line the workflow of c1, but i can't stand out that the have a sony version, but barely have any lens profile ... FE profile are even more limited ....

How do you guys dealing with that ?

I agree, this was also a problem for me when I used the free C1 Sony version, which also had other limitations.  So I upgraded to the "Pro" which cost $30 (think it's gone up now to $50) which is the full C1 version but only supports Sony camera's.  The Lens list is better but still not complete but you can use all the new color controls, which are great.  So if you have just the free version, I think the upgrade is worth the price.

    • I'd opt for a small zoom, but I must admit that there seems to be a dearth of lenses in the e-mount in the 24-50mm range -- for some reason.  I have a small 24-70mm, but that's an a-mount Tamron.  Maybe you can find something by looking at lenses slightly longer.  I have a heavy, but small 24-100mm a-mount, and Tokina made a 24-200mm a-mount.  Maybe there are similar lenses in the e-mount.  Kill three birds with one stone.
    • Well this! Thank you! I have been following suggestion after suggestion for the past 3 hours with my a7CR and never thought of removing the battery. Magic!
    • I recently got an a7cii and to pair with the compact body, I thought of getting 2 of the trio compact lenses, 24mm F2.8 and 40mm F4.0. (I already have a 70-200mm) However I stumbled upon the newly released 24-50mm F2.8 G. I'm not sure which to get - I like the small factor of the prime lenses ON the body because it's discreet and helps me blend in as an average tourist / doesn't make it obvious when doing street. But if I add the dimensions of the 2 primes together, it takes up more space in the bag than the zoom lens. BUT THEN, the weight of the 2 prime lenses is 110g lesser than the zoom lens. The zoom lens has the added benefit of being more versatile.   So now I'm stumped. Each has their pros and cons and I can't decide which to get. I'd like to hear the views of you guys who are more experts at this.   Edit: I'm a bit concerned about weight because the last time I went overseas my shoulders were aching from carrying too much. Which is why I was looking for small compact primes in the first place.
