Just read all the details ...

Will prolly get one after the A7R-MkIII is

in regular delivery. Thaz how I roll.

BTW did anyone else catch Sony's sense

of humor in their announcement ? I mean

where they use the word "extensive" in

reference to their range of FE lenses.

Perznally I see the Canon/Nikon range of

lenses as a pointless mountain of glass,

but for Sony to call their FE lens range

"extensive" is quite a stretch.

Its "extensive" compared to absolutely no lenses at all, haha!!

Nah the lens range is a moot point now theres plenty of good native options and adapted works a treat mostly so the glass may be half empty but the bottles half full on that one.

Oooh id like to have my way with this new camera.~[insert mental image of grubby hands rubbing together here]

I hope the auto focus is quite good, am surprised they didn't go 50mpx frankly.

I bet it is the 50mpx sensor but only reads from 42mpx for some technical reason or something like that.

I wish it was released now, i wanted a higher mpx body for landscape but felt the a7r was not quite right for me.

Thanks for posting. :P

i'm curious about the support for Minolta A-mount;

does the fast AF only apply for SSM lenses?;  i have quite some Minolta-gems like the 100 f2,0, 200 f2,8 and the 28-70 f2,8

as i understand it now they don't benefit from the faster AF and will still have to cope with the LA-EA4?

as an a-mount user I really wonder why Sony slowed down the a-mount camera line with all those magnificent lenses, and release so many outstanding cameras for e-mount line with just 13 lenses? what should we do? change the line or is there any chance of  new a mount cameras competing this monster (a7r ii) anything named a99ii or sth????

I thought sony just released two new a mount lenses?

It is not over for dslrs by a long shot, so as a guess i would expect a new a mount coming sooner or later.

Canon just released two 50 mpxers, and anyway, if you can adapt the a mount silicon to an a7r2 with fast 399 point phase detect a/f and ff 42 mpx goodliness, 4 extra stops of ibis, adapt any lens you want, why wouldn't you?

It would still not be quite as bulky as a ff dslr what say?

I would say if your desperate for a new body try out your a mount lenses with la-ea4 and a7r2 at a camera shop?

It might work out to be good as gold possibly?

As I hate adaptors I ll wait till next year!but I think they should find a way to satisfy their old clients and get the new tech to the a-mount line too rather than just using adaptors... If a7rii were a-mount I wouldn't hesitate to buy one! There are possibilities if that monster matched with a-mount arsenal!

I sold my D800E and some Nikon glass to get the A7R. It's my lightweight back up to my Pentax 645Z.  Looks like I will be selling some more gear including the R to get the RII.  <y only issue with the R is that the eyepiece cover comes off too easily.  It came off once on boarding a plane when it was around my shoulders on a harness and thankfully someone spotted it and gave it to me.  No such luck in New Zealand a month ago when it came off again.  Didn't notice it gone.

^Thats a damn shame about the eyepiece, i've noticed mine fold over sometimes.

@Amir, i hear you, la-ea etc adapters are kind clumsy i presume. [havent used 1]

i really hope Sony release a new a mount for you, and others, if youv'e invested in a mount silicons where do you go if you want to upgrade and leaving people in the dark is not cool.

The problem is we are talking about corporations and for them the technology is a means to an end ($) as much as it is for the artistic possibility & beauty of technical and industrial design.

A gentle person on here named jesse had the idea of a mount mirrorless dslr style body, one can only live in hope.

  • 2 weeks later...

The specs on the a7rii look fantastic and would love to get my hands on one some day. The one thing that stopped me in my tracks is that $price tag! Sure it may be a dream machine and do everything well but i am concerned about how the new sensor will perform until real users put it to test.

I shot nikon and sold my d810 and bought an a6000 and an a7ii and wish the a7ii would have lost the anti aliasing filter. It is a good camera but honestly i find myself shooting more with the little a6000 but would love to get this a7rii to get back to my d810 resolution just hope the price comes down some.

Is it bothering anyone else that Sony is not letting any photographers shoot and post full rez files from the a7rii??? or at least Sony post a few full rez files???

Do they expect everyone to just take their word for it that the new sensor will be good?

Not trying to sound irate or anything because i am shooting with a sony but cmon i want to see some actual full sample files from that $3200 dollar camera!

    • It seems entirely reasonable that they disable a video mode that requires a bit rate faster than any standard SD card can manage to an SD card (SD cards can be rated V30, V60, or V90) - if you try to record a video mode that would require something faster like a "V200" card then they don't let you.  OK, you have some non-standard hack that pretends to be an SD card, but records faster - seems perfectly sensible that they don't support it considering they look at the card to know how fast a rate the card can handle.  Pretty sure that Sony is protecting users who try to use a slow SD card to record a video mode that requires more speed than the card supports, and Sony has the camera say "you can't do that" rather than fail dismally to try to record it - can you imagine the complaints if the user got a recording that stuttered and captured a few frames then a gap then a few more frames? Feel free to complain, but don't expect sympathy. You tried  something that isn't supported, and it didn't work. As far as I know, Sony cameras are the only ones that support two different formats of cards, AND let you have two matching cards of either format. Every other camera that supports two formats has one of each. There are quite a few cameras that support two matching slots, but they only support one format of card (eg: the Z9 support two CFexpressB cards), so you don't have the option of a second format. I like the flexibility - I don't have have enough CFeA cards to cover everything - I can use CFeA for some and SD for others. Yes, CFexpressA cards were fairly expensive in the beginning (back 4 years ago in the A1), and I paid a fair bit for a Sony 180GB CFeA card. But a few years later I spent the same amount for a Lexus CFeA 320GB card, and just recently I spent almost exactly the same amount for a Prograde 480FB CFeA V4 card (which is over twice as fast to load into the computer). The price falls as there is more competition. Interestingly, measurements have shown that cameras like the Z9 cannot write at full speed to their CFeB cards (presumably because they get really hot - they write only as fast as CFeA speeds 🙂
    • If I press record when holding the camera vertically the video will be saved in 9:16 instead of 16:9 and I can't fint any option to disable that feature? It is really annoying having thumbnails being flipped 90 degrees in the editing software as well as having to flip the clips on the timeline. It is also very annoying that it is flipped when previewing the clip both in editing software but also in any media player. It happens really often when doing run and gun video (documentary style).
    • The picture profiles DO NOT affect RAW files. That's been said three times now. Even if RAW is affected by gamma, your custom settings don't affect each other, they aren't global.  Let's back up a bit. First off, which camera are you using? My A7 IV and A1 both have the ability to have completely separate profiles for video and stills.  Why can't you simply set up your video button with the settings you want and just push it? That's what I do. I can be shooting stills and if I decide to shoot video I just press the button. No need to move any switches or press any other buttons.
