There is no reason that it can't be both.

 

Fuji showed that there was a market for adapting lenses, they created that demand by showing what was possible with their X-Pro1, Sony then responded to that demand by giving people what they _really_ wanted, which was a full frame version of the same thing in their A7 series.

 

Yes, I know, people have been adapting lenses since the dawn of time ... but this time around pretty much _anybody_ can adapt a lens and get a good result. Creating demand or responding to demand ... a pendulum swinging or being swung ...
