Camera seems to have a mind of it's own!

I've had a A7iii for a few years now and up until recently all has been fine. However, when shooting in manual mode my camera changes the shutter speed after every shot, e.g. just taken a shot at 1/60th and immediately the camera set itself to 1/4000th without me touching it!

I have the camera set for BBF and the same change of shutter speed can happen when I press the shutter button.

Live View is on.

Any suggestions?

What mode? PASM? Does it reset to the same shutter speed every time or does it vary? Is it possibly overriding you in some Auto mode? Does it do it in M?

There's no setting I know of that would make it do this. You could try to start over with new settings or try a reset. If that all fails, then maybe contact a repair shop.

I have a similar issue with an a7R III. It seems like I've had this happen with previous cameras, but I don't recall if that was the shutter speed specifically. With this camera at least, I've used a clip on the band of my hip pack when hiking, along with a strap, so I can understand the back buttons/dials getting changed. But not the shutter speed dial. I tried some canned air as suggested elsewhere as well as a bit of alcohol on a q-tip , but that didn't help. 

I guess it's five years old now, and since I dropped it on a hard floor last year and the media slot door won't close all the way (I think it landed on that lower corner and something became misaligned), not to mention tripping and landing on it and the lens several times outdoors (on dirt), I need to send it in and get an estimate anyway.

But the shutter speed changing is driving me nuts now, and it happens when I'm not using that clip, just photographing things in my yard or porch. I almost always have to use flash on that with my 90mm macro, and that particular ring flash with two heads doesn't have HSS, so 1/250 and sometimes that's not enough. But it changes by itself, and most of the time goes above that so I get a black image when I don't notice.

I have same problem with A7R4 in manual mode. No matter what shutter I set,it will once in a while take a long exposure and when the exposure is complete it can’t read the f stop, programmed butttons don’t repond. Only way to get it back is shut it off and take the battery out for 20 seconds or so.

Love the camera except when this happens. Thought was a low battery but it just happened and the battery was at 98%.

You might want to get a Small Rig bracket. It protects the camera and its great for mounting in portrait or landscape. Note the USB cover opened. I love the bracket.
