A7r2 + la-ea3 + Minolta lenses

Hi guys,

 

I'll be purchasing the A7r2 soon and i want a cheap super tele photo lens for my amatuer bird watching thing.

 

I'm thinking of minolta 100-400 APO but still wandering if it's going to be autofocus with the la-ea3 on A7r2? Please let me know if anyone has tried mounting the minolta lens with the la-ea3 adapter

 

Ps. would be great if you could let me know the tracking af ability on the minolta lenses as well

If it's a screw drive autofocus lens I think you need the LA-EA which has a drive motor in it.

Thanks for the answer!! so basically the lens without SSM can't focus with la-ea3, am I right?

The LA-EA3 supports SAM and SSM autofocus but I don't think it supports the older screw drive autofocus common on many Minolta lenses. For this you need the LA-EA4. I don't know what type autofocus the lens you are considering has.

same question for me, I have the Minolta AF APO TELE  400/4.5 so is it LA-EA3  or 4? anyone in this forum that took pictures of bird in flight?

LA-EA4 will support all lenses except some old xi series lenses from the late '89's ( SSM, SAM, or screw drive traditional Minolta/Sony lenses) 

 

LA-EA3 also supports all lenses but AF will only be available for SSM, SAM or compatible motorized AF lenses

I'm using the LA-EA4 with my Sigma 500mm f/4.5, Sigma 15mm fisheye and Sony-Zeiss 135mm f/1.8.  Focus performance is pretty much the same as on the a99.  I haven't gotten birds in flight, but I did get some wild turkeys and wild asses in the Nevada desert. 

 

All of those lenses are screw-mount, so I needed the LA-EA4.  Your Minolta glass should focus just fine with that adapter.  Obviously, performance is not as good as it would be with native FE glass, especially for tracking.  If and when I can get lenses similar to the above in native FE, I'll probably do it.

Whatever lens anyone wants to adapt, they

need to check whether it's a shaft riven lens.

Just look at the rear of the lens while turning

the focusing collar. If it's shaft driven, you will

see the coupling spin as you're focusing. The

LAE4 will drive that shaft, the LAE3 will not.

I use a Min 100-300 APO with great success via the LAE4, on both my A7R and my A6000. The lens is quite outstanding.

Hi Jonathan, I am looking into the Sigma 500mm f/4.5 with your same set up. Anywhere I can take a look at your work with that lense + adaptor? Thanks!
