Greetings, I wonder if someone could help me with pinpointing the problem.

I am new Sony user (long time Canon user). Bought secondhand A6000 and used it for a few days with M42 to NEX adapter, since I have M42 lenses in abundance.

Today I received 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS lens, wanted to compare it to Canon lens kit, and to tell you truthfully it is splendid little lens, much better than Cannon 18-55 lens. Until it kinda stopped working. Auto focus became very strange, it either not working with lens fully opened (motor is not working), or I can hear motor working with big F stop, but it is not focusing accurately.

Web search didn't gave me enough relevant result, so I would be very grateful if someone here could tell me what could be the problem, with camera itself or the lens.

Only thing that I have tried is to reset camera setting, but that didn't helped. Any ideas?

P.S. No one of my friends is using Sony, so I have no access to another lens to try, or another camera.

Also happens with the camera in Auto (green) mode (check PASM dial)?

Bought the 18-55 new or second hand? Sounds like a lens issue to me unless you accidentally put the camera in A or M mode and dialled in a really small aperture (high aperture value), but from your post it seems like you know what you're doing regarding the aperture.

Does manual focus still work, and can you adjust the aperture manually? That way you can at least verify that both mechanisms are still in good order.

First, thanks for the reply. Yes, it is happening in all modes, bought it secondhand but with warranty.
Manual focus is not working, just checked it (I forgot about it :( , all canon lenses I have used had focus button on lens itself so it kind a slip my mind to try).

I can see on screen slider that is moving when rotating ring on lens, but picture itself is not focusing. And another thing, after turning off camera, it wouldn't turn on until I removed lens and put it on charger. It was not charging with a lens on. With M42 adapter and lens it was both charging and functioning properly. Without autofocus, of course.

Do make sure that your camera is in focus mode: manual. Most lenses don't have direct manual focus override.

If that is the case, definately sounds like a broken lens then... Good you have warranty! Haven't heard of many of these breaking. It's better and more durable than the 16-50 kit lens at least.

Well, something is starting to get worse, a few minutes ago I got "invalid because lens not attached" when trying to change from manual to auto focus. Lens is not dropped, all contacts look clear and not bent, both from camera and from lens side.

So, it is a lens, more probably than the camera? Thanks again.

There are really cheap  Adapters of this type out there, and they are cheap for a reason. Chances are high, that tiny metal chips or flakes may have lodged in the contact area of the body, causing this malfunction. Even though you claim that this area is "clean" (to the naked eye), I would advise to thoroughly wipe the contact area of the body with a microfiber cloth regardless.

This error message indicates, that communication between lens and body is interrupted, when the lens is, in fact, physically attached. This may be caused by malfunction inside the body, malfunction inside the lens, or malfunction in the contacts. Since the contacts are the only area accessible to you, I would definitely want to make sure that this is not the culprit, before sending off body and/or lens to a possibly expensive repair.

    • I've been using this lens extensively without any sharpness issues. At long focal lengths, you'll have to factor in the need for a faster shutter speed (< 1/500-ish at 350mm) and other factors like atmospheric distortion, fog/dust haze, etc. All these factors contribute to a deterioration of image quality at longer focal lengths.
    • That's supposed to be a pretty good APS-C lens. Can you try it on a different camera just for the heck of it? Friend? Camera shop? The lens is noted for sharpness, so if you're having as much trouble as you say, you may want to look into a replacement or repair.
    • Hi everyone, I’m reaching out to the community because I’m facing a persistent image quality issue with my Sony 70–350mm f/4.5–6.3 G OSS lens, and I’d like to know if this is normal behavior or if my copy is defective. Problem description: I’ve extensively compared the 70–350mm G OSS with my Sony 18–135mm f/3.5–5.6 OSS, using a Sony A6700, under controlled conditions: • Identical lighting and background • Same subject and position (LEGO figure, consistent framing) • Tripod or steady support • Manual focus or AF with center point • Same shutter speed (e.g., 1/200s), similar ISO (ISO 4000–6400), RAW + JPEG • OIS turned on (and also tested with OIS off) My observations: • At 135mm, the 70–350mm G OSS delivers softer, flatter images than the 18–135mm, even when stopped down. • At 350mm, the sharpness drops significantly – the center is soft, and textures (like LEGO tiles or fabric) appear blurred or smudged. • Contrast and micro-detail are noticeably inferior across all focal lengths. • The 18–135mm at 135mm (even cropped) retains better edge sharpness and detail definition. • Both JPEG and RAW files confirm the issue – this is not just JPEG processing or noise reduction. Question to the community: • Have others experienced similar softness with the 70–350mm? • Is it possible I have a decentered or optically misaligned copy? • Is there a known issue with OSS introducing softness at long focal lengths? I wanted to love this lens due to the range and portability, but currently it’s unusable for anything where image quality matters. I’m considering returning or sending it for service. Thanks in advance for any feedback or comparison results you can share.
