Sony SEL 18-200mm silver

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone.

I am thinking of getting a super zoom lens sony sel 18-200mm for my a6500 Body. Have you ever used this lens or do you recommend me getting one? I do most of the videos so it will be maily for my videography.. I got a nice deal on it, ($350 - USD)  so i am not sure if i should get it or not.

Thanks in advance.

It's a great lens, especially for stills.

I don't know how you shoot videos but in general, there are better options. Typically, you'd want a mechanical focus and aperture control, which this lens lacks.

This lens also has zoom creep unless It's locked at 18mm. So you would have to be careful not to tilt the lens while shooting video.

I Don't know if you just take videos of your pets and friends or do serious stuff, though.

It depends. I prefer manual vintage lenses for filming. If you will rely more on autofocus, one of Sony's f4 zooms is probably a good compromise for price/performance.

  • 4 weeks later...

Dears, I have the 18-200 silver and it is a very good lens for travelling for its long range focal length. I always travel with it on my A-6000 + a Nex-7 with Sony 10-18. A drawback of this lens is that it has  the tendency of dust collection behind the front elements. It is easily cleanable (I even cleaned mine myself), but would not prefer to use it all the time so save it for travel (especially in a relatively dusty weather like in Egypt). I am even considering a Sigma 18-200 or 18-250 + the LA-Ea2 adapter. I have used the Sigma 18-200 on a Nikon for may be 7 years and never had a problem, my daughter still uses it till now. The combination Sigma + adapter is almost the same size and weight (14 mm longer).

With respect to videos, I personally do not find it as a great option, due to its weight and size, after the first minute to 2, you start suffering fatigue in your arm. Adapted vintage lenses would be a very good option.

Why not use rge Power-Zoom version of this lens. It is specifically designed for video use. It is, however, more expensive. I use the original 18-200mm silver lens on my a6000, and it is the only lens I use (Except for macro where I use my 100mm Canon L lens, with adaptor and manual focus). One disadvantage of the 18-200mm lens is that one cannot use the built in flash, as the lens partially blocks the flash light. There are two other versions of the 18-200mm lens, one Sony, one Tamron. which are newer, cheaper and optically not so good.

    • I'd opt for a small zoom, but I must admit that there seems to be a dearth of lenses in the e-mount in the 24-50mm range -- for some reason.  I have a small 24-70mm, but that's an a-mount Tamron.  Maybe you can find something by looking at lenses slightly longer.  I have a heavy, but small 24-100mm a-mount, and Tokina made a 24-200mm a-mount.  Maybe there are similar lenses in the e-mount.  Kill three birds with one stone.
    • I recently got an a7cii and to pair with the compact body, I thought of getting 2 of the trio compact lenses, 24mm F2.8 and 40mm F4.0. (I already have a 70-200mm) However I stumbled upon the newly released 24-50mm F2.8 G. I'm not sure which to get - I like the small factor of the prime lenses ON the body because it's discreet and helps me blend in as an average tourist / doesn't make it obvious when doing street. But if I add the dimensions of the 2 primes together, it takes up more space in the bag than the zoom lens. BUT THEN, the weight of the 2 prime lenses is 110g lesser than the zoom lens. The zoom lens has the added benefit of being more versatile.   So now I'm stumped. Each has their pros and cons and I can't decide which to get. I'd like to hear the views of you guys who are more experts at this.   Edit: I'm a bit concerned about weight because the last time I went overseas my shoulders were aching from carrying too much. Which is why I was looking for small compact primes in the first place.
    • Hi, I have got a6300 which shutter stopped working. I managed to change shutter but unfortunatelly broke shutter motor tape but I fixed that. After repair the shutter is working but not in a proper way, watch with sound. I bought the second shutter and tried to test it before dissaembling again and it doesn't react to magnet but it works fine when I apply 3V. Are there different type of shutter for a6000 - a6400? Back to the question what is wrong with my shutter after first repair? I don't want to put next shutter unfoundedly. Do your sony cameras perform such a self-check after start up?  IMG_5579 (1).webm
