I got an A7III and am trying to figure out if it will work for my needs. I love some of the features, but coming from Canon, I'm wondering if there's a setting similar to Canon's "Lens drive when AF impossible" on the A7III.

In low light, I've experienced a few situations where the lens will go wildly out of focus as the camera hunts for any focus point that it can lock focus onto. With Canon, if you turn "Lens drive when AF impossible" to off, it will not do this. Essentially, if the camera can't immediately find focus, it will just stop trying. In some situations, this is useful, because even though you can't lock on with autofocus, it prevents the lens from going wildly out of focus trying to find any focusing distance that will work. This is a hassle because you often have to manually twist the focus ring back so it's at least close enough to being in focus that the camera can attempt to autofocus again. I'd rather have the camera just stop trying instead of throwing the lens way out of focus.

Is there any similar setting in the A7III, or are you pretty much at the mercy of the camera to hunt around for focus as much as it wants to?

I'm using adapted lenses with the Sigma converter, so I know that may affect this as well.

Thanks. Hoping I can make this camera work for me. It has some great tech, but I'm really wary of letting go of my DSLR.

Hello: I don’t know if there is a specific “Canon-like” setting to enable in the Sony, but I think the bigger issue is the adapted lens. I have the A7RIII & A7III. The only adapted lens I’m shooting (with the Sigma adapter), is the 70-200 F4 L Canon lens. Beautifully sharp lens and “usually” the Sony’s will AF accurately as long as I shot a static subject on single frame advance. BUT, when the AF misses, the Canon lens racks wildly out of focus. I was told on a different forum, that the Sony 70-200, either the 2.8 or F4, will not have this issue. I’m saving my pennies for the native E-mount tele-zoom.

Fair enough. I can't expect perfection when using adapted lenses. I've been using the camera a little more. Last night I took it to an event where having the loud shutter slap of a DSLR would have been very disruptive. I love the silent shooting. It's a crazy experience after using a DSLR for so long.

I really want to like this camera. The focusing is a little wonky at times, but I have about $10,000 worth of Canon lenses, and don't want to buy all of the Sony equivalents, which are just as expensive, and frequently not available used. I think I'm going to try a Metabones adapter as opposed to the Sigma I'm using now and see if the occasional crazy focus hunting is better when using that.
