I stopped using the 18-55 on my Nex-7 as edges of the images were pretty mushy sometimes, my thoughts are: What about the A7 Kit lens? I read it`s sharp in the middle but not the edges, but that's on Full Frame and the crop sensor will use the sweet spot in the centre.

Would I see an improvement over the 18-55mm? Or is there a better way to go?

You are correct about not using the

edges of the image.

As long as you're OK with the FOV

after you discard the edges of the

image, it's a good path to better IQ.

You'll likely wind up buying a wide

angle lens, as the compensation for

cropping the images from the FF kit

lens, so maybe you'd be better off

not buying a FF kit lens to put on

a crop sensor camera ? You could

just buy a higher quality version of

the kit lens's zoom range instead.

At a price the 16-50 (?) Zeiss should be noticeably good. But, honestly, at that price point I'd buy directly an A7...

So if I were you I would just buy a couple of Sigma 19/2.8 and 35/2.8 and learn to "zoom with my feet" (i.e. walking back and forth to change the field of view).

I've never bought the kit lens, but I own the 35 and I use it on the Nex 7: it is extremely sharp straight from wide open (at least my copy) and always nails the focus, even in poor light.

In general most (if not all) images taken with zoom lenses will have soft corners.

If you want edge to edge sharpness then you should look after prime lenses.

    • AI sez: The CHIPFANCIER CFexpress Type A 4.0 memory card offers 1700MB/s read speeds and is VPG400 certified, making it suitable for 8K video and high-speed shooting. However, some users have reported limitations in frame rates with this card.  Don't know if that applies, but it sounds similar. Any chance on using/getting a different card? The A7 IV has a ridiculous buffer, it shouldn't slow down at all with a good card.
    • Make sure camera and lens is updated to latest firmware.
    • ISO 320 is the A7R5's second base ISO setting. You will find at ISO 320 you will get better results than even ISO 200. I normally take a set of shots at 1600, 3200 and 6400 ISO. I am taking 60 light frames and 10 dark frames. I don't do any adjustments to the files before stacking. I really need to get organised and do some bias frames now. Here is pretty much my first successful Milky Way shot from a few months ago. I was combatting a bit of ambient light and quite a lot of cloud but I'm pretty happy with this. It was shot using my Sigma 16-28 f2.8 which is better at astro than I had anticipated, at ISO 1600.
