Camera Crash - Menu Info Disappears

Camera A7rII

Sony Camera Firmware V2

JJC TM Multi-Function Timer Remote

Outdoor temperature 34 degrees

My camera is a little over a month old.  I am a relatively new Sony user.  On my last camera shoot, I was taking photos just fine and then the camera went from working to displaying "Camera Error" and either turn camera off and on again or the word restart.  Can't remember exactly which.  I had to do this twice before the camera started working again.  About 1/2 hour later, my menus and buttons no longer worked.  I would press the function menu, no display; same with the big control wheel to access ISO and the menu button itself no longer worked.   I turned the camera off and waited a few seconds and then back on, which seem to restore the menu and button functions.

About 2 weeks ago, the camera seemed to be "stuck" in Auto ISO mode and I was unable to disable that function and finally had to reset camera settings.

Any clues - should I take the camera back?

Return it. If you mention the adapter, they won't take it back.

Return it for refund and buy the replacement from a different

supplier. If you were to try returning a second camera with the

same failure to the same supplier, you might encounter resistance.

The adapter could be faulty and is destroying the firmware in the

camera. You need to risk a second camera to find out. Kuhpische ?

EDIT:

Should have mentioned possible alternate method

[circumstance dependant]:

If ... IF ... you bought the adapter AND the camera from a well

respected place like B&H or Adorama, and were sold the pair as

a compatible outfit, they would be extreeeeeemely likely to take

both back for replacement. They do huge volume, and reputation

is as precious as time. Therefor, they know that taking back both

is faster than figgering out which unit is at fault. If the camera

was killed by the adapter, both are now faulty. If the camera had

failed for its own reasons, then they take back a bad camera and

an innocent adapter, but time is money, reputation is money, and

your money is money. Money talks, nobody walks.

Thank you for your response.  I have used this adaptor on

my A7S for over a year with no issues similar to those

described above on the A7RII.  The adaptor has had it

firmware updated to the latest version.  The camera was

purchased from my local camera shop.

That does seem telling, but it is entirely possible that

the firmware in the later model body is more advanced

and so may be more vulnerable to "infection" by some

unauthorized electronically connected device, i.e. the

adapter. IOW, it's still suggested that upon presenting

the camera for return, that you not mention anything

about using a "smart adapter". There's a very thin line

between "smart" and "lobotomy".

If ... big "if" but not unthinkable ... if your adapter really

did lobotomize the camera, it's gonna be embarrassing

to show up at the local shop with the replacement body

similarly brain-fried.

I see you are a noobie. Welcome ! Now, if you have not

recently [coupla years +/-] been reading photo forums,

you might be unaware that it's become more and more

dicey to use third party devices that communicate with

your camera via hardware connection. IOW, wi-fi seems

harmless, but direct connection seems to be becoming

somewhat of a Pandora's Box ... pre-digital-era meaning

of "Pandora" acoarst ! Obviously, there are devices that

really do enable us to expand our photographic abilities,

but caution is more and more advisable as systems grow

more and more sophisticated.

Guest Colin Scott Johnson

This happened to my A7 II.

I never used an adapter.

Do a search for Camera Error.

It was quite common with the A7 II.

It was only 2 months old and this happened maybe a week after a firmware update.

Nothing would fix it except sending it in for repair to Precision Camera in CT.

It took about a week to get it fixed and returned.

Thanks all.  I did as Colin Scott suggested and did a search for Camera Error and he is right -- it does seem to be quite common, though sad for such an expensive body.   My camera store has taken it and sent it off for repairs under the warranty.  I sure hope this works as I do love this camera in all other respects.
