Having upgraded from A7III to the A7rIV the noise level appears considerably increased and not just at comparatively high ISO. It’s not an issue removing in post but was wondering if the higher level was characteristic of the 61mp sensor and may also be evident for A7rV owners also?

The A7III is a low-light monster. Any time you increase MP count on the same size sensor you also reduce the pixel size. Larger pixels have the ability to gather more light. The A7R IV being 61MP is naturally going to be slightly less forgiving, but it's still workable.

If you check out Photons to Photos there's about a stop difference except for one area. Sony cameras have a second native ISO due to two-stage amplification. The A7R IV beats the A7 III from ISO 320 to 500 +/-.

These days noise is almost a non-issue with the software available. I use DXO Deep prime, which makes lens corrections and denoises automatically. I shoot above ISO 12800 regularly, and ISO 20000 isn't uncommon.
