  1. Hi everyone! I just switched from Canon to Sony a7r2, so I'm using my Canon lenses with an adapter on the new Sony body. After some shooting I stumbled on some issues, which I found some reports of on fora, but not yet any solutions. Was hoping you guys might be able to help out! ISO: I read about 'great low-light capabilities', but so far every time I go over ISO 800, pictures go way to noisy (shooting RAW), while seeing posts with ISO 8000 (http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/tag/sony-a7r2/) where there doesn't seem to be any issue. MF: Shooting in low-light, on a 50mm f1.8 lens (on f1.8) there is no way of getting any focus. The focus peaking doesn't even appear. I could easily nail these shots on my previous body, but the screen is making it impossible (effects view is already off) to gain any focus. Autofocus doesn't seem to work. I ready about this and was hoping there would be any solutions by now...? Can it be the converter (metabones)? Or are there settings things that I'm overlooking? Or might there be any firmware updates available? Hope you guys can help me out!
  2. On my A7s I noticed that when shooting in SLOG2 if I go up to ISO 8000 the image will have a different noise pattern than if I go up to ISO 10,000 and then down to ISO 8000, same ISO but totally different noise I know that people have reported a similar issue with the A7sii with SLOG3 but what I read was it was believed to only be a bug with that picture profile It's this kind of "Trick" ISO that does something weird to the noise Going up give the ISO a kind of "Dirty" grain but going down to the very same ISO will give the ISO a "Clean" grain I compared Native 3200 to this ISO 8000 when it had a "Clean" noise and also the "Dirty" noise http://imgur.com/RzOCZko http://imgur.com/AWU0IED http://imgur.com/G6QoXWl The thing is I see this not just on SLOG2..I see it on all picture profiles..on multiple different camera models... On the A7s this happens on the following Picture Profiles on the following ISOs: http://imgur.com/SLmoyEF Here is a video of me going over the issue and explaining more in-depth:
  3. I'm a few weeks in with my a7RII and am slowly getting my head around shooting and coloring using S-LOG2. The results have been super impressive so far but one thing that I can't seem to figure out is how to manually control my ISO as well as my exposure (using the manual dial) while shooting in Manual (movie) Mode. For example, I've set my ISO to 3200 and would like to overcompensate let's say +2.0. But it seems that the only time the exposure dial responds is when the ISO is set to 'Auto' otherwise the camera automatically controls the exposure. This is driving me crazy, any help would be incredibly appreciated.
  4. In March, i got the chance to shoot some aurora borealis in norway. Lucky 3/6 nights. One night, i wanted to get some balance between stars and aurora in the sky, but the aurora was too strong (luxury problems, i know.) in the first place. So i decided to freeze and wait for less activity... totally worth it, imo. Coming from Canon-Fullframe-Land after many years, i thought i knew, what good high ISO performance was. Insert gameshow fail sound here. Boy, was i wrong! The high ISO capabilities of the A7R2 blew me away as i shot an exposure of 30 seconds at ISO 5.000. Of course, there's some noise, but WAY less than i expected from a 42MP picture. And quite easy to remove, too.
  5. Hello everybody! I have an issue with my Sony A7iii. When I shoot at a high ISO (20000 and upwards) my camera produces images with strange line noise patterns (see image below). This is especially annoying since it's hard to fix in post and just looks plain ugly. This effect only occurs in dark areas of the image so it makes low light photography, especially outside at night, pretty much impossible. One thing me and my friend found out is that it has something to do with RAW compression (or lack there of). When compression is off, these artifacts occur, whereas when it is on, the striping is gone but the overall image is a little less sharp and more grainy. But the strange thing is, the striping does not happen at all with my friends's camera (identical body and lens). So maybe there is an issue with the sensor? I am seriously at a loss here, any advice would be appreciated. Some additional info: When comparing, we used the exact same camera settings and I use mechanical shutter.
  6. Normally I shoot video in manual mode with ISO set to Auto. So, while recording, the ISO continually adjusts depending on lighting. Is there a setting somewhere that prevents ISO from changing while actively recording something - and only adjusting again in-between shots? My use case is such that I want the camera to adjust ISO for exposure, but then lock that in throughout the shot and then re-adjust for the next one. That way, I don't have to manually select my ISO for each shot, but also have locked in settings throughout the shot that are easier to work with in post. Apologies if this is an obvious "feature" which I'm unfamiliar with. I haven't had much luck searching around for similar questions or a feature to fix it. Thanks!
  7. I'm a new A7R iv owner and been playing around with bracketed HDR using long exposure times on my tripod mounted camera. Ive attached a shot I took yesterday (edited with Aurora HDR). I originally tried to shoot this at an aperture of f 11 with an iso of 100, but the exposure time would have been > 30 sec (which is the slowest exposure time offered in the setting for keeping the iso at 100). Only at f 4 could I get the slowest bracketed exposure time to be less than 30 sec. I did constrain the iso to be 100, but is there some limit on exposure length that I am not aware of? Arguably, I'd like the camera to take all the time it needs to shoot the image at the chosen aperture and chosen iso setting. I'm sure I've done something wrong in the setup, but I'm not sure what!
  8. hi to all Sony camera users I`m a video photographer but recently doing more and more stills work`s I have noticed some bad noise\grain in my photos (raw, iso 4000,s-100,f-2) the lens is Zeiss 50 mm macro f2 (great lens by the way) and the lighting condition are normal tungsten lights in a room the thing is that if I do some noise reduction with the adobe camera raw software (push up the luminance) it`s kind of solves the problem but I`m not a stills expert to understand if I'm losing some other quality of the image with this correction. so my question is am I doing something wrong with the camera? is it ok to use this fix in the camera raw software, or am I missing something? thanks, guys it`s a great forum! yotam
  9. Hello, I am new to the Sony Alpha A7ii camera. I am having a little trouble with my iso setting. I want to shoot 1/50 and iso of 160 in movie mode but the 160 and below iso is grayed out. Can the camera not shoot below 200 iso in movie mode. Do I need to change a setting in order to do that? I have looked all over the place for this but have come up empty. Thanks Nick
  10. A question addressed to the A7-specialists: As far as I could find out, the A mode on the A7 (ILCE-7 Vers. 1.10) works as follows: If ISO is not on auto, shutter speed is automatic in the full range, if ISO is on auto, shutter speed is automatic while ISO tries to minimize to 100. As soon as automatic shutter speed would rise above 1/60 s, ISO automatic starts to increase. As a result, automatic shutter speed does not adjust to values above 1/60 s as long as a maximum ISO of 25600 is not yet reached - then it starts to increase further up to 30 s. Is there any way to change these somehow arbitrary limits of 1/60 and 25600 to more specific and useful values ?
