I have an R7iv which reports as v1.0 firmware. I don't want to take a chance of rendering it inoperable if something goes wrong, unless there's a real benefit to updating. Anyone know what the benefits are of the newer firmware? what functionally does it do better?

At the firmware update page at the Sony website, there should be a history of firmware updates and and what problems each update addresses for your camera model.  If the solutions provided by the latest firmware update is not a problem for you or you could live without it, then just skip it.

If you are not having any problems with the camera's functions as is, I wouldn't bother with the update.  I did not bother to update my A7II to the latest firmware version because the camera functions well enough (mostly shooting with legacy MF lenses) and what should be a simple process of updating the firmware could very well become a kiss of death for my camera.  It may be an ancient body to some but I don't foresee myself upgrading the camera anytime soon -- maybe never.
