A7III - Face detection auto focus only works in video mode

A7 III with Sony FE 2.8/24-70 GM lens.  The face detection auto focus works great when camera is in Video mode.  But when I set to any of the other modes (P, A, S or M), the auto focus does not work.  Face detection is working but the camera won't auto focus.  Focuses fine when using the back focus button and Eye focus.

Any ideas why?

I'm not sure I understand you...does the camera function properly with back button focus?  If yes, then I suspect you have turned off focus with shutter?
