Suddenly, the L-dial on the top of my A7R5 doesn't have an effect anymore in the shooting modes:
In the M Mode, the exposure time sticks at 1/320 s, and cannot be changed.
In the A mode, rotating the L-dial has no effect.
In the S mode, the exposure time is selected with the front dial, and this still works.
In Playback, the L-dial dial functions normally.

Resetting the camera to the factory settings didn't eliminate the problem.
Any suggestions? Could the firmware have become corrupted?

By 'L Dial', I assume you mean the mode selector dial?

Computer programs (firmware) don't typically change themselves. It could change if influenced by an outside source, but unless you've added something it's unlikely.

You could always try reloading the firmware, but my guess is the camera will recognize it and refuse the update a second time. It sounds as it you've tried several things and recorded the results. If you feel you've exhausted all options and a factory reset didn't work, then you should probably contact Sony service.

Hope it works out for you.

The "L dial" is the dial between the mode selector dial and the dial for setting the exposure correction...

I tried to update the firmware to version 3.0, but this proved not to be possible.

The camera's firmware is probably stored in flash memory. One guess: The sudden change in de camera's
behavior might be caused by memory cells that have become defective. I already experienced such a defect
in an SSD in my PC.
I'm going to contact Sony service...

Even before that, a lot of early Sony DSLRs, SLTs, etc. had only one dial, and you had to push a button by your thumb and hold it to change the second parameter, based on which mode you had selected. My Minolta Maxxum 5D has only one dial, as does my Sony A350. Minolta's DNA is very evident in those old cameras.

My A7 IV's 'R' dial is marked for Exposure Comp, while my A1's dial is unmarked.

    • i said the lens, Sigma DG DN sports 70-200 FE, the lens is fast enough to track most small birds coming at you or flying away, but the camera seemingly does not want to track   it also does the same with my Sony lenses on LA-EA5 adapter.   I always do birds at f/4 and 1/5000+ and no stabilizer   Thanks for the link on BIF, I will check it out and show results
    • You must be. I have an A7 IV and an A1, and while the A7 IV isn't nearly as fast as the A1, it is actually more tenacious. I have never had a problem with any kind of action shooting at all. Conversely, I had an A7R III that I loved, but the AF was so far behind the A7 IV I had to give it up.  I also had trouble with Ambassador settings. Without naming any one in particular, I found most of them to be useless.  Have you ever checked out Mirrorless Comparison? This post has rankings for many different cameras. The A7 IV is ranked very high and in some excellent company:
