How to access camera data storage

Recommended Posts

I bought a new A6000. Every thing looks fine. I haven't put in a SD card yet but took a few photos. I plugged it into my computer via the USB cable provided and two apparently different devices appear: Sony DSC and Sony SDC:PMHome. The latter opens automatically and seems to consist of software I can download. I go back to Sony DSC and it won't open. Never had this problem before. Can anyone tell me how to access my photos?

I don't think there's any photos to be accessed if

you didn't insert the SD card ....

IIRC the camera only charges when powered OFF.

With power on, you access the card, or without any

card you access some basic structure in the FW. I

can tell you that "DSC" is the beginning of every

file name for every Sony camera's image files. So

you prolly bumped into a sort of master template

that the firmware uses when it names files when it

writes them to the card.

I never saw Sony software seemingly, or actually,

downloadable from the camera cuz I never looked.

It's standard practice to ignore all software bundled

with all hardware and to go online to download the

latest versions. By the time hardware is distributed

and sold, the bundled stuff is no longer the latest.

I almost never plug my camera into my PC so I've

got no exact recollection of the procedures. I also

charge my batteries externally. You have only one

camera to act as charger, but can have numerous

external chargers, which is most appropriate for a

system that needs 3 or more batteries on hand to

be useful. BTW, to supply external power to USE

the camera, you use a dummy battery and AC-DC

converter ... NOT the USB jack.

I love my 6000 and use it often, but apparently my

methods are not what most users use, so I'm often

puzzled by the questions posted around here, cuz

I'm just an old film user who has minimally updated

to digital tech [iOW no expert at digital] yet I seem

to fortunately avoid everyone else's usual troubles.

I substituted sensors for film and kept on keeping

on, and all is cool. It leads me to wondering if the

digital marketers promise too much, so that digital

users then expect too much, which leads to grief.

Ah! So there is no built in memory at all? Interesting. I never had a camera that didn't have a few MB ...

After I took each shot it showed it on the screen as if it was working but I think you are right. Thanks!

I'm aware of some older cameras that could store a few pix internally, but they date to a

time when the file size was very much smaller than the current file sizes. I don't know of

any camera today, at least any camera of "enthusiast level", having any internal memory.

When you try to access the Sony DSC device, it may not open because your computer may not have the correct drivers installed to recognize the camera as a storage device. To access your photos, you'll need to install the necessary drivers and software.

You can try downloading and installing the Sony PlayMemories Home software from the Sony website. This software is designed to help you manage and transfer photos and videos from your Sony camera to your computer. Once you have installed the software, connect your camera to your computer via USB and see if it is recognized correctly.
