Loxia 21mm filter thread problem

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had any problems with the Loxia 21mm filter thread?

I use the Lee filter system, so I ordered an adapter ring from Amazon. I cheaped out and got a 3rd party version seen here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K70LA6G?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

It will not attach to the lens. It seems like either the adapter thread diameter is too wide, or the lens filter thread diameter too small

I assume it's the $20 adapter ring rather than the $1500 Loxia! I've emailed the seller. But I am just wondering if anyone else has used a 52mm filter on this lens yet?

Filter Dude ... I would not have believed it unless I saw it.

Anyway, the problem is not likely with the lens, you need the correct thread pitch for your lens : M52 x 0.75 is for a Loxia.

Thanks folks

Timde: it's not even that the thread pitch is wrong, it's simply too wide for the diameter!

The seller is sending me another copy. He was very responsive and is trying to put the situation right. Fingers crossed the new one fits.

Any lens with the new modern, shallow, plastic filter

threads [way too typical, regardless of price of lens] I

do not use at it's original thread size. I step it up a bit.

From 52mm I typically step up to 62, etc etc. Usually

this means you cannot use an OEM bayonet mounted

petal hoods, but there are exceptions, where a step up

ring can be installed AFTER mounting the hood ... but

acoarst then you can't conveniently remove the hood

[which doesn't bother me in the least, any "amen"s to

that ?]. Anywho, step up rings tend to have longer and

deeper and higher quality threading than you'll find on

most filter rims. So, the step up is all about improving

the threads that will see regular use. It's not for solving

any other problem such as vignetting altho it certainly

will cure such problems should they exist ... but I do it

for basically one reason, to substitute better quality

threads where the OEM threads are second rate.

Typical result is that where a [for instance Hoya HMC

in both cases] 52mm filter would mount by only 2/3 or

3/4 of a turn directly into the OEM thread, a same-brand

filter, but now 62mm, will mount by almost two full turns

into the stepping ring. Major improvement.

Since my lenses are not exotic, the petal hood is NOT

usually supplied but sold separately, which acoarst I just

don't buy. But a few of my lenses did come with bayonet

mounted hoods, and I just reach down into the mounted

hood and install the stepping ring ... but only if testing

reveals that the hood has some benefit in first place !
