a7R iii compatible lights

Recommended Posts

I just purchased my first "real" camera, Sony a7R iii. I am trying to learn how to do my own product photography and set up a little photo studio in my basement workshop. The next thing I need now is some strobe lighting. My question to you folks is are these lights I have linked compatible with the a7R iii? And if so, will it suit my needs for beginner product photography?

Any input on these items, or any items I am missing would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

The light looks very ambitious for a beginner.

I would start with a simple LED panel, which can be picked up for as little as 30 bucks. If this is not enough for you to start with, then try a Rotolight Neo (I recently bought a second hand one Neo2 for £80 - This has white balance adjustment and power adjustment and can be used as continuous light or flash (even with continuous modelling light and flash.

These do not have Through the lens metering, but continuous light works really well with mirrorless cameras, as you see what you are going to get through the eye piece, or screen.

I am sure you know but you will need many flash heads, soft boxes reflectors and light stands for each flash.  If you want a seamless background, you will need rolls of background drop sheets along with the stands to set them up.  You can find lots of videos on Studio set ups and flash photography on YouTube but it will be a good idea to get some books on the subjects to be used as a quick reference on various lighting conditions.

As beardedgroundsman says, that flash head is an overkill.  If it's a small studio in a basement you should be able to make do with a number of Speedlights with a modest range with fast recharge flash units, this in turn lets you use less robust light stands and smaller diffuser boxes.
