Straight to the center point of this post....I cannot find enough superlatives to tell you how good this lens is....I have the A7R and A7R11, 16-35 zoom and a super sharp 2.8 35mm and Tamro150-600 with alfa adapter plus a bunch of Minolta legacy lenses.

I could post some pics but you could never get a sense of the quality unless you got an original which I am not sure how to make available, Weight wise I don't notice any difference between this lens and the 16-35, of course they as with any lens a few minuses and the only soft minus would be the auto-focus appears a tad slower than I would expect but I have nothing similar to compare it to. I have eagles that daily sit on a tree at eye level on the bank about 70 feet in front of us and I am using the Tamron for the full frame close up but when I was out with the 90mm I just took a shot freehand out of curiosity to see what it would be like ...well when I cropped the result to equal tamron's bird size the 90mm was considerably better( when I cropped it in light room I brightened it a little but nothing else) The pics are not usable to judge quality they are just to illustrate what I am referring to..

Anyhow this is just to pass on to fellow A7 users what an incredible lens this 90mm is and with the A7R11 a brilliant combination that has me running around looking for subjects to use them on..

Dieselhead, thanks for this post. I am currently on the fence between this lens FE 90mm f/2.8 macro and the Batis 85mm f/1.8. I know the Batis is smaller and lighter but with the 90mm macro and I do both Macro AND portrait. I may just order this one.

Well Damo like you I was on the fence but I wanted something now not months away so cancelled the Batis and got the 90 in three days.

I see DXO rate it as the highest score ever on their testing, above all those $4000 lenses, also I really appreciate the slip ring to go between manual and auto... I really don't think you will be dissapointed.

I'm enjoying my 90, and it'll do for portraiture until I get the Batis, whenever that may be.  It's worlds better than the 100mm f/2.8 for A-mount.  Shooting portraits with it, and my a7r2, the detail is . . . well, you can almost say it's too much.  I've never shot with such a combination, and it's going to take some getting used to.  I still have the Zeiss on order, and I wonder if the rendition will be a bit more flattering, and a bit less "clinical."

I can understand the enthusiasm of "dieselhead" on the Sony FE 2.8/90 G OSS Macro. I have it already assessed on the Dyxum page and it compared with: Minolta AF 2.8 / 100 mm Macro (D), Minolta AF 4.0 / 200 mm APO Macro G and the

Minolta M-Rokkor 4.0 / 90 mm. There I wrote on 07.18.2015:

Positive: Great handling, AF very quiet and fast, AF area limitation, focus hold button, fix total length, sealed, built quality, not realy heavy, sharpness!!!, bokeh!! Negative: Length and volume.

Comment: I have this lens for a few days and am thrilled. Compared to the Minolta AF macros 100 and 200 I see it settled on the sharpness performance between both. The advantages in handling but are convincing and the weight is just about acceptable (weighed by me 640 g with Cokin filter and hood). Besides sharpness like with the bokeh of 90 macros exceptionally well - it comes almost to the Bokeh of the 90 M-Rokkors! Conclusion: For me, a kind of "Swiss army knife" at the A6000 (an now on the A7 II).

I see my assessment by DXO rate confirmed!

    • Hi Guys, I have a Sony a6000 bought second hand. It's working fine but the photo capture from video function in the playback menu is missing. I've updated the firmware to 3.21 from 1.00 but the option is still missing. I can now shoot in XAVCS but would like to grab still images from the video. Anyone please?
    • The 200-600 is heavy. If you're not used to the weight, it can be daunting over a period of time. Since the lenses are the same in speed, you aren't gaining any low-light performance. But as Pieter suggests, what about the short end? Is 200 going to be a problem? Are you shooting from the sidelines or from the stands? If after reviewing your most commonly used focal length you find 200 won't do it, then you could look at the Sigma 60-600 Sport. It's about the same price as the Sony and would give you more at the wide end but is a bit heavier yet.  Two other options would be the Sigma 150-600 and the Tamron 150-500. Both are similar in weight to the others, maybe a touch lighter.   Lastly, and if reach is your problem, then this may not work, you could look at the Tamron 50-400. It's an amazing lens, sharp from end to end, considerably smaller and lighter than the others, and costs less. I use it all the time, thousands of shots, and it never disappoints. But 400 may not be long enough for you.  FWIW, I have the 200-600. It gets taken out about 3 times a year, while the 50-400 goes with me every time. If you go with one of the larger lenses, plan on using a monopod just to help with supporting it for a few hours.
    • Some questions to help you formulate the answer to your own question: In what sense do you feel your 70-350 is lacking? What do you hope to gain from this 'upgrade'? What % of your shots are in the 70-200 range? If this % is significant, the 200-600 is not an option unless you carry two cameras or don't mind lens swapping. What % of your shots is at 350mm and potentially could have benefitted from more reach? Do you need high resolution shots or is cropping in post an option to fix your compositions? Would carrying a lens over twice as big and over 3 times as heavy have a negative impact on your photography (think of fun, mobility, physical strain, packing volume)?
