Has anyone ever tried say a Nikon 300mm f2.8 or longer on a a7?

I wouldn't mind given it a got but reluctant to spend 300 dollars on an adapter just to give it a try..........it would be for shoot wildlife

Any advice tips would be much appreciated

Can't talk for Nikon but I use 300 and 400mm Canon FD lenses on my A7

(PS: Sorry, but the SW of this forum softens everything...)

What adapter goes for $300 ?

I'm using the MetaBones ...

for only $100, top quality.

Before that one I was using

a borrowed "Fotasy", a $25

item, with clunky latching

mechanism, aluminum rear

flange, kinda tight front

[chrome/brass] flange, but

it was built planar true to

the sensor plane [critical

focus test, fast WA] and is

correct for infinity focus

[fast WA test again].

The Fotasy is apparently a

step up from even cheaper

stuff that is often reported

to be out-of-plane to the

sensor etc etc. Thus it's a

perfectly good adapter for

getting your feet wet.

The MetaBones is correctly

aligned, excellent chrome/

brass for both flanges, a

really good latch, and the

tripod fitting by itself can

easily justify the $75 over

the Fotasy, which has none.

Interested to know what, if

any, miracle is included in

a $300 adapter. I use nothing

but old F-mount lenses on my

A7M2, so I'm not joking. If I'd

get a serious advantage, for

$300, I'd consider doing it.

Hi Neil and welcome too, i used a nikon film era 70-210mm on a7m2 with no problems with a cheap ebay fotodiox 16$ adapter and got results, however, i stepped up to a metabones which Golem rightly implied is better built with finer tolerances and better machining and also has the tripod mount, i think you will find apart from possible physical handling disparities long zooms will work great on a7x with any reasonable adapter and even better with more finely crafted adapters such as the metabones etc..

I did notice some fringing at f4 on the nikon lens, but not abhorrent nor aesthetically abominable, certainly not hideous.

The metabones speed booster is around that figure isn't it?

Adds a stop (I think - I've not used one as I prefer Novoflex)

so there is some advantage.

Tim

No. There's no advantage. When you put a SpeedBooster

on a FF lens, you do gain a stop, but you render the lens

into APS-C territory as to format coverage. The purpose

of such devices is to restore the original field of view when

using a FF lens on an APS-C body/sensor. They could be

functionally described as being the reverse devices as the

tele-extenders [shrink image size but gain lens speed].

    • I'd really like to find a package deal for an a7R (mk I, second generation) which includes the neckstrap and box. I've searched Ebay and currently no one is listing what I'm looking for. They either have the camera only or a first generation a7R and a lot of them don't offer the Sony neckstrap or box it came in. I know your site doesn't have a formal 'Equipment For Sale' thread and granted Ebay is a better place to sell gear but I thought I'd see if any of the members have one and would like to upgrade to a newer model but don't think anyone would be looking for one that old. The cameras I've been using are in the 20 megapixel range and rather than jumping to a 40mp camera due to file size, the 36mp that the first a7R has was appealing to me and wouldn't break the bank. I've been using Canon and Nikon but really want experience a Sony. If a post like this is undesirable for this website, I understand but I thought I would ask. Thank you.
    • Here's a good thread on the issue.... https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4571046 And here is the info on the A7RIVA that maybe explains why I don't see the issue...  The change in wording that caught my attention is that the new A7RIVA brochure says the structure has been "re-examined and redesigned." Don't know, but given the text of other parts of the brochures are copied word for word, the change in text here seems significant. My reading of this is that it is a redesign of the A7RIV. In that case, perhaps the 200-600 issues are less severe with the new body.
    • I'd opt for a small zoom, but I must admit that there seems to be a dearth of lenses in the e-mount in the 24-50mm range -- for some reason.  I have a small 24-70mm, but that's an a-mount Tamron.  Maybe you can find something by looking at lenses slightly longer.  I have a heavy, but small 24-100mm a-mount, and Tokina made a 24-200mm a-mount.  Maybe there are similar lenses in the e-mount.  Kill three birds with one stone.
