They were the only place that still have stock without having to wait on back orders - Tell them I sent you!

I pulled the DJI Ronin-M straight out of the box and started recording this video.

Attaching my Sony A7S to the quick release plate was easy and adjusting the balance was fairly straight forward with the stand. 10 minutes max for setup and adjusting. It's well packaged and certainly well built, it feels very durable and extremely light weight for what it is. I have to improve my technique a bit, but so far its a handy piece of kit. I might go down to the local skate park and get some 60/120 fps footage. Its probably where its really going to shine. But at this stage I think its a bit of over kill for what I do. But I am hoping to improve myself to the point I can shoot a short film and then it would be handy then. Also please take note that the lens I used didnt have Image stabilization built in nor does the Sony A7s. I will upload a Video comparing a 24-105mm USM Vs the 35mm & 50mm Samyang's without IS. This video was filmed in 4K @ 25fps.

The Sony A7S & Atomos Shogun are new and I'm still got to learn how to use them. But I am about to start ramping up production of more video more consistently as I get used to Filming, Lighting, Editing and Sound editing.

If you like the Video & Subscribe it does my confidence the world of good and helps me to continue on with making more videos and improve my skills with each one. Thanks

I used a manual focus lens.

For static shots you can open the lens right up to fl.5 but moving forward towards or around a subject at various focal lengths then something like f16 to f22 and ramp the iso up. Ideally a wireless follow focus installed with the controller mounted to the handle would be perfect!

The ronin looks super. Loved the testing routine!

Focus - I was pleasantly surprised at how well you held focus throughout and even when it dropped it looked natural. At the high ISO the a7s is capable of I suppose f11 & f16 are extremely viable.

Have you recorded 1080 on the Atomos and, if so, is there any noticeable (in the real world) difference between prores and xavcs? (I suppose the real answer to that is contingent on how much grading you are trying to do in post but your thoughts would be appreciated).

Tim

Ps my Ronin M order is still in the "pre-order" phase...

    • It seems entirely reasonable that they disable a video mode that requires a bit rate faster than any standard SD card can manage to an SD card (SD cards can be rated V30, V60, or V90) - if you try to record a video mode that would require something faster like a "V200" card then they don't let you.  OK, you have some non-standard hack that pretends to be an SD card, but records faster - seems perfectly sensible that they don't support it considering they look at the card to know how fast a rate the card can handle.  Pretty sure that Sony is protecting users who try to use a slow SD card to record a video mode that requires more speed than the card supports, and Sony has the camera say "you can't do that" rather than fail dismally to try to record it - can you imagine the complaints if the user got a recording that stuttered and captured a few frames then a gap then a few more frames? Feel free to complain, but don't expect sympathy. You tried  something that isn't supported, and it didn't work. As far as I know, Sony cameras are the only ones that support two different formats of cards, AND let you have two matching cards of either format. Every other camera that supports two formats has one of each. There are quite a few cameras that support two matching slots, but they only support one format of card (eg: the Z9 support two CFexpressB cards), so you don't have the option of a second format. I like the flexibility - I don't have have enough CFeA cards to cover everything - I can use CFeA for some and SD for others. Yes, CFexpressA cards were fairly expensive in the beginning (back 4 years ago in the A1), and I paid a fair bit for a Sony 180GB CFeA card. But a few years later I spent the same amount for a Lexus CFeA 320GB card, and just recently I spent almost exactly the same amount for a Prograde 480FB CFeA V4 card (which is over twice as fast to load into the computer). The price falls as there is more competition. Interestingly, measurements have shown that cameras like the Z9 cannot write at full speed to their CFeB cards (presumably because they get really hot - they write only as fast as CFeA speeds 🙂
    • If I press record when holding the camera vertically the video will be saved in 9:16 instead of 16:9 and I can't fint any option to disable that feature? It is really annoying having thumbnails being flipped 90 degrees in the editing software as well as having to flip the clips on the timeline. It is also very annoying that it is flipped when previewing the clip both in editing software but also in any media player. It happens really often when doing run and gun video (documentary style).
    • The picture profiles DO NOT affect RAW files. That's been said three times now. Even if RAW is affected by gamma, your custom settings don't affect each other, they aren't global.  Let's back up a bit. First off, which camera are you using? My A7 IV and A1 both have the ability to have completely separate profiles for video and stills.  Why can't you simply set up your video button with the settings you want and just push it? That's what I do. I can be shooting stills and if I decide to shoot video I just press the button. No need to move any switches or press any other buttons.
