I wanted to update the firmware of my a6300 from the original 1.00 to 1.10. So I downloaded the updater tool from Sony and ran it on my Windows 10 computer. I read public recommendations on a website (forgot which) and adhered to all instructions that the tool itself told me. The camera went into mass storage mode when I connected it to the computer. The tool showed me the correct version and went on to "reset the camera" (whatever that means). The camera was then shut off and after a short while the tool said the preparation for the update could not be completed. The provided recovery instructions lead to the same result.

I can still use the camera after removing and inserting the battery. But the firmware update doesn't work.

Are there other options to perform the firmware update, like in camera via a memory card?

No, you have to do it via the application.

What I found with the Sony updaters is that you connect the USB cable and run the application with the camera switched off.

Once it detects the camera, turn it on.

Try this and see if it works

I have the original cable. Switching the camera off and on later or in between didn't help.

What did help though was using another computer with the same software, but a USB2 port. My Surface doesn't have USB2 anymore, only USB3, so it might not be usable for camera firmware updates. Seems you always need to have a spare old PC for such legacy hardware. I wanted to use a battery-powered computer for greater grid power outage safety.

The firmware has now been updated.
