Hi guys,

I have question for a7s ii users/owners. I don't do video, 99.5% is still. I love the low light capabilities from my a7s. I plan to upgrade to a7s ii.

With my a7rii, I use eye af very often. I aslo use flexible Af(af-c mode) to compose my shots. The a7rii is great, however, my a7s is not.

Those with a7sii, how do like your a7sii in af-c mode, with flexible AF mode?

Thanks in advance guys,

D.

I don't have the A7Sii (had the A7S), but I don't think the upgrade is worth it if you don't do much video.

Certainly, there is 'IS', but that only has limited uses and a tripod (or even a wall/table) will serve just as well. The other major improvements mainly relate to video, such as 4K internal recording.

Given that the sensor is the same (or only marginally different), I'd imagine AF is similar; probably to the extent it would be hard to test.

When the new models came out I felt it was a no brainer: the advantages the A7Rii offered were great, but I certainly would not have considered the A7Sii as an upgrade (I actually prefer the body and control wheels of the earlier cameras).

Thanks for your reply Peter,

Reason I'm asking is my a7s has 25 contrast detection and a7s II has 169

I would expect that the AF ability is better, but the trick is knowing by what degree and where it makes a difference.

My understanding is that the main improvement is, again, in video use, where the extra points allow for a smoother system.

The specification suggests that AF will work in even lower light levels than the A7S, but we are talking about such difficult conditions it may be hard to tell whether any hunting is because of the limits of the camera, or the particular subject.

Personally, I would have to have most of my work in such conditions and need a lot of testing before I'd feel confident of any benefit.

Ultimately, you will need to consider two things:

First, that the A7Sii will never be as fast AF as the A7Rii except in very low light, so you'd need to put aside any comparisons.

Second, the relative value of that 'niggling doubt'. If you have the cash to spare then you may feel it's worth it just so you can be sure to have the most capable, rather than always wonder.

I tested the A7s II over the weekend. AF-C is much-much better than my a7s. Will get one from BH soon.
