manual focus magnification doesn't work in video mode on a6300?

Recommended Posts

As above - it's kind of odd that when I twist the focus ring in photo mode, magnification will be enabled automatically for me to check precise focus. However in video mode, it doesn't magnify (even though I can adjust focus). This happens regardless of the focus mode (AF-C/DMF).

Any idea why or whether this is normal?

Also, is it true that I can only have EITHER peaking or magnify on at any one time? I enabled both, but when in magnify mode, I can't see the peaking wiggly lines.

Both aids can be active and the magnifier does not

cancel or override peaking ... altho it can seem that

way. It's nature of the peaking, which is not really

responding to focus but is responding to contrast

effects at edges. Somehow, it doesn't detect much

contrast under magnification, so you seldom see it

display its color there. But every now and then I've

seen peaking display its color in magnified viewing

so I know it's not switched to "off" by engaging the

focus magnifier.

I'm kinda glad it works that way. I think full strength

peaking during magnify would obscure the details

that your trying to see. Peaking is not accurate all

the time, cuz it doesn't respond to actual focus but

to contrast. Magnify offers verrrry accurate focus in

any circumstance, so it's cool not to clutter up the

magnified view with peaking color.

In still photo focus is achieved before recording of

the image, so it's OK that you can't see your whole

scene while focusing in magnify. In video, since the

recording is constant, you want to see your whole

scene even while focusing. At least that seems to

be Sony's "philosophy". I certainly find myself not

agreeing with that idea in every scenario, but I can

see how they came to set the system up the way

they did.

My own preference is to only have focus magnified

when I press a button to activate it. Even when I'm

doing still photo I despise having the magnifier leap

into action every time I touch the focus ring. In video

it would be an even worse annoyance. But magnify

at the touch of a button can be very useful in many

video situations. Sony can't seem to separate the

"Leap in at a touch" magnify from the "Only when I

push a button" magnify. They both turn off or on as

a single choice in the menu. When using old ancient

lenses on a non-electronic adapter, one of the cool

benefits is that magnify never "leaps in" ... it waits

until it's invited by the push of a button !
