New G Master Lens stays in video mode when switching back to photo mode

I've just updated the firmware on my A7RII and tried my new G Master Zoom Lens. If I switch it to video mode it works well but if I go back to taking take stills the shutter will not fire in either aperture or auto modes. So, no photos. When I take the G Master lens off and replace it with a non-G Master lens and it works fine and the shutter fires. Anyone else had this problem?

There isn't a lens update is there by any chance?

Yes: there is a lens update but when I went to install it I received the message that "this update is not required", so it would not download.
