Hey all. I need a little advice on my next upgrade. I'm deciding whether I should upgrade from my a7ii to the rii (used) or if I should spend then money on picking up a Canon 85mm 1.2. As of right now, I can't afford to do both without my wife killing me.

I feel like the a7rii is calling my name, but am I really getting much of an upgrade from the a7ii aside from more megapixels and anti aliasing filter? And does anyone have confirmation about whether the commlite ef to nex adapter works with autofocusing? That would heavily weigh in on my decision because that would force me to purchase the metabones 4 as well. I primarily shoot street, sports, couples, and fashion.

My current lens selection includes

Sony 70-200 F4

Zeiss 55mm 1.8

Zeiss 35mm 2.8 (may sell it)

And a few vintage lenses

Any advice in this matter would help. Thanks all!

I have the 85 1.2. Unbelievable lens! That said, I rarely use it. If I were in your shoes, I would do the a7rii over the lense upgrade. With that camera, you will get an unbelievable resolution increase with all your lenses. The iso performance is much cleaner than the a7ii also. Autofocus is also much faster. Lastly, I would stick to native glass. (eye auto focus) tends not to work well or not work at all with some adapted canon lenses. For street the 85 is also a bit big and heavy. For your portraits, your 70-200 at 135mm is perfect for mid body head shots...

You have a fine essentials outfit that doesn't

really NEED upgrading. Not saying some sort

of upgrading will be a waste, but can't imagine

it being a necessity. So, in that context, no one

can give you advice that has greater value than

your own personal whim. And again, not saying

outside advice is useless. Cuz aftrawl, it may

inspire additional whims to consider. But really

anything that inspires you would be cool, since

your kit is already excellent.

That said, whims-wise, I'll contribute: Didja

ever consider a fisheye ? Sports and couples,

mebbe not. But fashion and street, why not ?

Golem, thanks for the input. I actually haven't considered a fish eye lens yet. I'll do a bit of research and YouTube watching on them. I've seen the nice effects they have on buildings and landscapes but hadn't considered it for fashion.

And Nado, I think I will be going with the a7rii. I completely forgot about the cropping potential, allowing me to step further back at even 200mm with my lens and catching some awesome, nearly equivalent shots for the time being.

The trick here is, albeit a very difficult trick, is to appreciate where you have any difficulty with your current gear.

For instance, there is no point in wanting a lovely 600mm lens for sports and birding if you never, ever go to sports, or bird watching!

Of course, the argument usually goes somethig like, "Well I don't take pictures of them as I don't have the kit", but we all need to be really honest about whether you would, or wouldn't, and the simple truth is that if it was a serious interest you'd be out there already getting the best you can with what you have.

It's a bit like these folks who, with the best will in the world, get themselves an old wreck of a car to renovate, even though they will never have the time, skill, or resources, to do it. The idea of cruising around in a shiny classic is very hard to resist, but most of us will never have the opportunity and it's 'rose-tinted' glasses that makes us believe otherwise. Sadly, the rusting hulk disintegrates slowly in the garage waiting for the time to get started on it.

So, to go back to your question, I would try very hard to assess where you are taking shots and find it time consuming, difficult, or ultimately fruitless, to get those you want. Then figure out why.

Once you have done that you will have your answer (but I did say it wasn't easy)!

the only argument for the A7RII is better ISO..... IMO

if you like shooting in the dark or have problems with noise in your shots go for the RII or 7S

otherwise your setup is great

i have the excellent Rokkor 58mm 1.2 and other 1.2 lenses and never use them because they are to heavy...so your sonnar 55 and the zoom is great...i think no need to upgrade

take care of G.A.S. you will never get what you desire...... better to go out and make nice photos

I'd be tempted to stay where you are at the moment and revisit the upgrade option when iii/iv are released... I'm guessing that you don't really "need" additional megapixels nor do you seem to be complaining about your current images. If you have cash wanting to be spent invest in a lens?

After long debate, I ended up getting the A7rii. I just couldn't pass up the 2600 dollar price tag plus warranty. I'll wait a month before pulling the trigger on another lens. I'm hoping the new sony 85mm will be available or possibly I'll come across a zeiss batis for sale.
