This is straight forward. C (continuous) is used for moving subjects where you need the camera to continually adjust the focus. S (single) would be for the opposite, ie. portraits, landscapes, and anything stagnant. MF (manual focus) is self explanatory.  A (Auto) in my experience should never be used.  (The camera sometimes does not make the right choice and this can be very frustrating) Hope this helps. .
