taking stills after/while videoing?

I have been stopping the video and pressing the shutter button to get a still.

Sometimes I get a 3s timer sometimes I don't?

I haven't set the timer, so is this in the firmware and
why does it shoot without a timer sometimes?

I have an a5000.
