March 30, 20178 yr ` Equivalent FF FOV = 85mm is great for ordinary close focus images, and for much closer work, the FOV gets tighter due to its legacy focusing system. IOW, at half life size the FOV narrows to be about 110mm [ = FF]. If I were using my modern 60mm the FOV would not tighten up like that. So the 55 leaves a bit more room to light the subject. And acoarst the focusing rail is my salvation. I can hardly imagine working without it after first deploying it decades ago. The lens and focus rail are at least 40 yrs old ... maybe 50. The camera is "legacy" in digital terms, a Nex-7. It doesn't have the high ISO ability of cameras just a few years younger, but macro on Podzilla doesn't need high ISO like my other interests require. And, at minimal ISO there's no reason to deploy the a7II plus the longer lens that it would need for the same result. FWIW TWIMC etc .... rig also includes Metabones E-NF converter and Globuscope thingy under the rails [yellow bubble levels]. The Globus thingy raises the Novoflex so that the drive knobs aren't crushed against the platform on Podzilla, so it's required even if a camera has built-in two-axis on-screen leveling. Acoarst Podzilla also has a pair of levels, but the bubbles have grown kinda huge :-( Thaz cuz Podzilla is also a legacy item ... an ancient Slik that can manage an 8x10 monorail view, at 11 feet, in a a stiff breeze :-) Also, a skylight filter is hardly necessary to a macro rig, but it's included just to irritate those who are irritated by skylight filters }:-) `
