Greetings. First post on SAF.

I'm thinking about developing a filter mounted or hot shoe mounted device that I can control with the shutter button. Do any of the hot shoe contacts or other outputs (wired or otherwise) on a Sony Alpha body send a signal when the shutter button is pressed or half pressed? Ideally I'd need a 'Momentary On' signal that matches the shutter half press or back button press.

TIA

The PC socket only provides shutter full-press, not half-press, unfortunately.

For what it's worth, I believe the entire A7R family, the A1, and the A9 family all have the PC socket - the latest member of each family definitely does (interestingly, always next to the HDMI socket). Unsure about the A7 family. I don't think the APS-C cameras do (the A6700 definitely doesn't), and I don't think the A7C family does.

The other place you might be able to get the signal is from the micro-USB that has other connections (it's a weird beast with multiple additional connections to support things like a cable remote).

    • If I press record when holding the camera vertically the video will be saved in 9:16 instead of 16:9 and I can't fint any option to disable that feature? It is really annoying having thumbnails being flipped 90 degrees in the editing software as well as having to flip the clips on the timeline. It is also very annoying that it is flipped when previewing the clip both in editing software but also in any media player. It happens really often when doing run and gun video (documentary style).
    • The picture profiles DO NOT affect RAW files. That's been said three times now. Even if RAW is affected by gamma, your custom settings don't affect each other, they aren't global.  Let's back up a bit. First off, which camera are you using? My A7 IV and A1 both have the ability to have completely separate profiles for video and stills.  Why can't you simply set up your video button with the settings you want and just push it? That's what I do. I can be shooting stills and if I decide to shoot video I just press the button. No need to move any switches or press any other buttons.
    • Yeah, but it means that if the PP affects the RAW then if you are an hybrid shooter (photo + video) that's not ideal right? No you can't. You can't have separate custom profiles for video and images. When you enable picture profile, the creative look (PP in photo mode) is grayed out. Yes you can configure the custom setting button but that is one extra step. Canon has got custom button 3 mapped to record button.   The ISSUE here is that when you are in photo mode you have to: 1) Turn the dial to the custom setup you want 2) Switch to video mode 3) Press record Canon has got the custom button 3 mapped to the record button. What does it mean? You are in photo mode and I just need one step: press record button and it will record with the setting pre-set on custom button on the dial. But one thing that bothers me massively is the fact that the PP affects the RAW.   Is there a way to speak with Sony? Do they have any platform where we can give them inputs? This should an extremely easy firmware update (custom button on the dial mapped to the record). The PP affecting the RAW that I am not sure but it should be very easily fixed I believe unless it's got to do with the architecture of the circuitries inside the camera, etc.
