Hello everyone, this is my first post here. I've been a Canon user for 5 years and am on another rumors site I visit regularly. However the a7rii has peaked my interest as an additional camera to my canon system.

I have a curiosity about one of the mentioned settings that I haven't gotten an answer to.

The a7rii has a fully electronic shutter mode used for silent shooting, but since this mode is completely electronic, there is no moving parts. Hence no moving parts means syncing flash should be able to be done beyond the 1/250th without those black bars. I don't know if it's a rolling readout or how fast the readout is but I'd like to know as its very important for me. I use a x100s and a H3D Hasselblad just for its awesome native sync speeds. If anyone can use their a7rii with a strobe or flash, enable the full electronic shutter for silent shooting, and see how fast their shutter can go before seeing black bars or a drop in flash exposure... I'm dying to know. This would be a secretive game changer like the x100s sync speeds.

Thank you,

Ramon

I'm not sure about the A7rii but when I've tried using the A7s with the silent shutter mode the flash doesn't fire at all.....

I can confirm that the flash does not fire in silent shooting mode, sorry to squash your dream, I would have loved it too!

I was wondering about the same but then

2 notes from the owner's manual and Help guide (available on Sony support):

"If you shoot images under instantaneous lightning or flickering lights, such as

the flash light from other cameras or fluorescent lighting, a striping effect may

occur on the image."

"When [ Silent Shooting] is set to [On], the following functions are not

available:

[Cont. Shooting]

Flash shooting

Auto HDR

Picture Effect

Picture Profile

Long Exposure NR

e-Front Curtain Shut.

S. Auto Img. Extract.

BULB shooting

Multi Frame NR"

So this new technology still has to evolve before actually replacing traditional shutters for many uses.

Has anyone tried to pop a flash at the same time hitting the silent shutter to confirm any artifacts from flash lighting? I'd like to know if it's indeed a hardware issue or something Sony is holding back in firmware that could be updated later.
