I own both of these stellar lenses and love them both.  The 50 is a little faster at f1.4 versus the Batis 85 at f1.8.  I get some  great portraits from the Batis.  If you want bokeh, the combination of f1.8 and 85mm will definitely give it to you.

Here is a portrait of my friend at f2.8, ISO 200 1/400 sec.  It looks soft and that is on purpose.  She is 65 years old and needs the benefit of soft lighting.

I don't have a portrait with the 50 f1.4, but this photo really demonstrates the bokeh.  Taken at night without a flash at f1.4, 1/125 sec, ISO 5000.

Thank you Steve, i appreciate your response and examples. Both lenses do seem to exhibit really nice bokeh and sharpness where desired. I guess the question for me will come down to whether i desire a lens for environmental portraits or one for tighter composition. Hmm, first world problems ? thanks again!
