A7III and Neewer NW320

I assumed that using these two together would be a simple thing but I seem to be doing something basic wrong.

At this point I'm sure that the Neewer NW320 is designed to work seamlessly in TTL mode with the A7III but, after much experimenting and research I'm still having the following problems:

- When I set the flash to TTL mode and the camera exposure mode Manual, the flash goes off before the shutter fires. The same thing happens when I set the exposure mode to Auto

- When I set the flash to Multi mode and the exposure mode to Auto, the flash and shutter synch but of course I can't control anything.

Can anyone either point out what I'm doing wrong or direct me to a tutorial that will show me how to get the flash and camera to work together properly?
