There's a weird figure-ground reversal going on. If his head were

blocking view of just some of the fruits, this would not happen. As

rendered, the defocused fruits appear as either defocused objects

in the foreground, much closer than the subject, or as background.

It jumps back and forth. Neat effect, but also visually disruptive. If

the fruits were not so light in tone, perhaps they'd visually stay in

background. The more I look, the more they become foreground,

yet by having some sense of the actual size of a mango fruit, it's

rationally clear that they are physically, if not visually, background. 

  

Or .... are they very small not fully grown and are really foreground

and the subject is not simply in front of the tree but also under it ?

Curious mind would love to know !
