External Recorder for a7II

Hi all. 

 

First of all I would like to thank you for your time if you reply.

I am currently looking for an external recorder for my Sony a7II.
I know the camera does not support 4K output so I am undecided
if I even should get an external recorder that could improve the image quality.
 

It is also unclear for me what would be the benefit of recording in 1080p on an external recorder.
My first thought was the codec but I found a few articles stating that Sony's codec is as good as ProRes.

 

So in terms of image quality in 1080p would there be an improvement to the internal a7II recording?
