Sony a7II with vintage manual lens mounted.

I want to spot meter and lock the readings and recompose and focus and shoot.

The AEL is set to toggle.

How to operate the toggle?

Is it operated by pressing the shutter button or any other button?

As I understand, toggle means on/off, it requires 2 actions to toggle, one to turn on and one to turn off.

How do I carry out these 2 actions when the camera's setting is set at toggle?

Press a button twice, one to turn toggle on and one to turn it off?

Which button?

Thanks.

This is how I do it

1/ Move the switch down to AEL

2/ Half press shutter and hold to meter

3/ Now with thumb, press the button "inside" the AEF/AEL lever to lock the exposure

4/ ...

5/ press that button again to unlock the exposure.

FWIW, Its all in the manual and online help.

"2/ Half press shutter and hold to meter"

Does it have to be held at the half way down position prior to pressing the AEL button?

Pretty awkward if the camera is not fixed on a tripod.

In practice its completely natural ... it does seem awkward from the description, but actually its fine to work this way. Just try it first and see ...

I've bound both AF and AEL toogle to customs button (using A7R2).

Hello Mick

This is interesting but I would not know how to "bind both AF and AEL Toggle to custom buttons"

Therefore it would be nice if you would be so kind as to explain, referring to menus etc., in what way you have done so.

Almost in a "step-by-step way making it possible for "dummies" like myself, to understand and apply your method!

Thanks on beforehand!

I use mine so habitually I can't even recite

the steps, but ... I'm pretty darn sure that

your "step 2/" is unnecessary. I find half-

pressing to be a real pain, so if my camera

required that, I'd still be looking for a way

around it. Thus my 99% confidence that your

"step 2/" is redundant to using ONLY the AEL

button on the rear. [sorry, I don't have my

cameras with me as I write.]

IOW, I just aim the metering pattern wherever

is appropriate and hit the AEL button with my

thumb to ignite the little asterisk symbol in

bottom corner of the viewer, indicating that

the exposure is now locked. I don't touch the

shutter button except to record the image.

The lock remains from frame to frame. Actions

such as using the playback button will cancel

the lock. Many useful actions, like MF Assist

do NOT cancel it [i use only legacy lenses so

that is very handy].

My Canons have AF lenses but I have removed

the AF from the shutter button, to a button on

the rear. I reeeeeally don't want the shutter

button acting on ANYTHING except the shutter,

on ANY camera. YMMV.

yes,

2/ Half press shutter and hold to meter

is not necessary.  Its just how I use the camera - I might meter a few times to get a reading I like, then I lock that.

Thank you, Gentlemen.

1. For various readings on one subject, I think the half-pressing of the shutter is useful.

2. I will lock the readings if there is no need to get different readings of the spot metering.

Thank you, Gentlemen, for your help.
