Godox Witstro AD360 HSS

Recommended Posts

This is a short informative post on how to use HSS using the Godox Witstro AD360 (manual version) and a X1T-S trigger.

You'll need:

  • Godox Witstro AD360
  • Godox Propac PB960 battery pack
  • Sony camera with MI hotshoe
  • Godox X1T-S trigger
  • Godox XTR-16 receiver

Power on your camera, trigger, and strobe. Press the mode and set buttons on the strobe to turn on HSS mode. Hold the CH/OK button on the trigger for 3 seconds until you see FN 00, press the GR button once, then scroll the wheel until the bottom number reads 25 and press CH/OK again. Turn off electric first curtain shutter on your camera, and ensure the flash mode is NOT in wireless. Dial in your exposure with a shutter speed up to 1/8000s, and fire away!

It works. It really does. Ask me questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

HSS studio strobes for the masses!

On a whim, I've been experimenting with my Nissin Air and the Godox X wireless systems to see if they could work together with HSS. On my last shoot, I had a couple of trigger fails using a PC sync cord from the Nissin receiver unit to the Godox Witstro, so I switched it to firing optically instead and it got it done. I was shooting outdoors in direct sunlight, so it would have been incredibly nice to have HSS available on both systems at once, and since the Sony system triggers HSS through the extra pins in the multi-interface shoe, it seemed to be a lost cause.

Until now.

I've found that you can put the Nissin Air commander on your camera and have it trigger a Nissin receiver that's directly attached to a Godox X1T-S transmitter, and have that transmitter trigger the HSS on the Godox unit while the commander is simultaneously triggering all the Nissin units. It seems like a stupid idea, but it totally works. Combine HSS studio strobes and speedlights for maximum effect!

Duncanfoxphoto...

thanks for the basic info; I just got my Godox set up and am still tiny bit confused.

Yes, I did see all the zebra banding at HSS, easy fix by turning off the e front curtain.

I am noticing that I cannot HSS my Manual AD360 any lower than 1/8th power...?  Is that normal?  On full manual mode without H mode (HSS) I can go down all the way to 1/128th no problem; but on the flash it is limiting me to 1/8th is the lowest.  On the trigger of course it lets me dial whatever I want, but on the actual flash head it limits.

Also, why on the FN 00 change to 25 as indicated on your post?  That is delay synch options?  What does that do?

Thanks, just joined the forum and looking forward to sharing my experiences and learning from others

Regards

Steve

    • I'd really like to find a package deal for an a7R (mk I, second generation) which includes the neckstrap and box. I've searched Ebay and currently no one is listing what I'm looking for. They either have the camera only or a first generation a7R and a lot of them don't offer the Sony neckstrap or box it came in. I know your site doesn't have a formal 'Equipment For Sale' thread and granted Ebay is a better place to sell gear but I thought I'd see if any of the members have one and would like to upgrade to a newer model but don't think anyone would be looking for one that old. The cameras I've been using are in the 20 megapixel range and rather than jumping to a 40mp camera due to file size, the 36mp that the first a7R has was appealing to me and wouldn't break the bank. I've been using Canon and Nikon but really want experience a Sony. If a post like this is undesirable for this website, I understand but I thought I would ask. Thank you.
    • Here's a good thread on the issue.... https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4571046 And here is the info on the A7RIVA that maybe explains why I don't see the issue...  The change in wording that caught my attention is that the new A7RIVA brochure says the structure has been "re-examined and redesigned." Don't know, but given the text of other parts of the brochures are copied word for word, the change in text here seems significant. My reading of this is that it is a redesign of the A7RIV. In that case, perhaps the 200-600 issues are less severe with the new body.
    • I'd opt for a small zoom, but I must admit that there seems to be a dearth of lenses in the e-mount in the 24-50mm range -- for some reason.  I have a small 24-70mm, but that's an a-mount Tamron.  Maybe you can find something by looking at lenses slightly longer.  I have a heavy, but small 24-100mm a-mount, and Tokina made a 24-200mm a-mount.  Maybe there are similar lenses in the e-mount.  Kill three birds with one stone.
