Looking for recommendations for a portrait lens for my 6300. I mostly take pictures of my kids and animals. Not looking to break the bank either; probably around $600 max? Is purchasing a used lens not recommended? Thanks!!

Hello Photonanny614,

Take a look here: Portrait Lens .

You have two options if you want to stick with Sony native lenses e 50 1.8 or if you eventually want a lens that can be used with a full frame sensor FE 50 1.8 both will give you a 75 mm equivalent which is good for portrait photos.

Yes, a 50mm 1.8, is about 75mm f/2.8 on full frame, very suitable for portraiture.

If you are not planing to get a FF, then get the APS-C version (Sony 50mm F/1.8 OSS), an alternative is the Sigma 60mm F2.8 DN A, it's not as fast but slightly better focal length.

I also highly recommend the Sigma 60mm Art 2.8.  It can be had for $125 to $150 used on Ebay and is a wonderful, compact lens.

The 50mm 1.8 OSS is a no-brainer. Good sharpness, nice bokeh, low CA, works with hybrid af and very affordable.

If you can chip out a little more, then the 55/1.8 is in reach, if your willing to buy via e-infinity or something like that.

I personally have very good experiences with them, bought multiple lenses there. Alternatively, it might be possible to find it secondhand at the same pricelevel.

That is an awesome all-around lens very well suited for portraiture on an A6300 (I have one myself).

I use it a lot to take pictures of our baby son and it is really great.

To be fair, I think the 55/1.8 adds too little on APS-C to be worth spending 3-4 times more than the 50/1.8 OSS.

If an upgrade to full frame is out of the question, then it is a little expensive, I agree. If it's not out of question I would certainly consider it.

Better than buying an aps-c lens now and a full frame lens later imo. I (incorrectly) assumed the OP would consider upgrading to FF like I do.

+1 for the FE 55mm 1.8 if there is a reasonable chance of you upgrading to full frame.

Kids and animals ... OSS.
