Hi all, I was wondering if the Sony A7s2 could have Phase detection AF capabilities?

I mean, I see that only Contrast AF is available now and when using EF Canon lenses, this is not as fast as when having phase detection AF like on A7ii and A7Rii.

The sensor of the A7s2 will never be able to provide Phase D AF, or a firmware update could add it?

Thanks for your feedbacks

Stef

I'm almost certain it can't be added as it requires specific types and arrangement of 'sensels' on the sensor.

It may be that a version could be created, but I suspect it wouldn't be worth the effort, even if the processing power was available.

The result would probably be too slow and too inaccurate.

The problem as far as the A7S is concerned is that phase detect needs good light and big apertures to be quicker than contrast and the A7S is specifically biased towards low light performance.

That's why it can focus down to -4ev, whereas the A7R is limited to -2ev, even if it is a little slower.

The bottom line is, until technology improves even further, or someone comes up with a brilliant new idea, we can't yet have a camera that is all things to all men. Maybe one day...
