Deleting pictures on camera after downloading

To avoid carrying too many pictures in the camera itself, I have always deleted the pictures on the camera upon downloading. the Sony A 77 II does not allow Picasa, for example, to delete the pictures. Is there a way to do that or delete large numbers of pictures at one time on the camera itself?

I format the SD card through the menu on my 7R regularly. This takes leass than 10 seconds.

Agreed. Format the card. This is particularly important for video but is something I'd regard as being best practice in all circumstances.

Doesn't formatting the card wipe out any custom mode 1 and 2 settings you have set up? If so, that's a bummer.

That's not a very wise strategy if you don't shoot that many photos. The memory cells in memory cards have a limited number of writes before they fail. Newer cards have improved, but they're still limited. If you have for example a 16GB card and only shoot lets say 500MB worth of images on an average outing and delete them immediately after download, you're constantly using the same first section of the card and the rest is mostly unused. A better strategy is to let the card fill up before formatting. That way you spread the usage across the whole card and so prolong its lifetime..

 

Of course it's a different story if you usually shoot much more than a small fraction of your card's capacity.
