January 28, 20232 yr Started today. Won’t AF and can’t MF. Makes a nasty grinding sound. Sounds like the lens. Thoughts?
January 31, 20232 yr Author Looks like the focus gears. Precision quoted me a little over $450. Any other good places?
January 31, 20232 yr Though the quote of $450 doesn't sound too strange to me, I think it'll be a waste of money to spend it on this lens. For less than $450 you can buy a Sony 24-70 second hand in good condition. Perhaps put the money aside to invest in a new (better) lens, such as the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 G2.

I went with this lens for the 24mm. If I were to upgrade it would probably be to the 24-105G. For the shooting I do 70 works well enough When it comes to longer shots I have my adapters and the Pentax F*300/4.5 and 67 165/2.8.
January 31, 20232 yr Author I read through an article on this lens. The sound it makes ... wouldn't surprise me if that coil came loose and was beating itself back and forth trying to focus. But I'm not about to take it apart ... not yet. https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2015/04/tearing-down-the-sony-24-70-f4-za-oss-vario-tessar/
February 1, 20232 yr Get the 24-105. It is a sweet lens. It is worth the extra money over the cost of the repair of your 24-70.
