Hello. I just got a great deal on a used 70-200 f2.8 GM but I want to know if the focus noise is normal. I have the f4 and it’s essentially silent during AF. I use AF-C 99% of the time. The 2.8 lens seems to work great and I can’t find any issues, AF is as fast as the f4, maybe slightly faster at times. However the AF motors are audible. I don’t think there is anything wrong but I was surprised at the difference coming from the f4.  I understand the 2.8 is mechanical focus vs electronic.  I think in a silent shooting situation people near the camera could probably hear the focus motors.  Is this normal operation?  Thanks!

If the focus noise is noticeable, it is not normal. I have a 70-200 f2.8 GM FE for my a7rii. In a quiet room, I can hear a very soft noise as it focuses. The noise does get just a little louder if it is in a focus mode that causes hunting. I don't have the f4, so I can't comment on the relative sound level compared to the f4. I do have an LAEA4 adapter that allows me to use with my old Tamron 70-200 f2.8 with my a7rii. (That lens is native on my old Sony a900 DSLR.) Now THAT is a noisy-focusing lens! It uses the old screw drive focus method. The noise doesn't matter, of course, for stills, but it is very noticeable for videos.
