  1. I currently have a Fujifilm xpro2 but I am thinking of getting the Sony a7RIV when it comes out. I am completely baffled looking at the Sony web site re lenses. A zillion choices. I would like an all purpose lens 18-135 mm or in that range, a wide angle lens, a telephoto (I currently have a 100-400 mm zoom for my xpro2) and a macro lens. I do mostly landscape photography but may want to get in to birds. I do a lot of traveling so want to be able to carry my equipment and while price is not of a great concern, I am not going to spend 10K on a telephoto lens. Any suggestions would be appreciated. (The reason I have not yet ventured in to Sony mirrorless land is because of negative reviews I have seen re the menu system)
  2. Has anyone used Sony M UHS-ll ss memory cards with the IV? I have a book of these cards and wasn’t sure how they would perform. I’m waiting for my A7RIV to be delivered and really don’t want to spend any additional money. How much longer will the buffer transfer take? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Jeremy
  3. Hi, I got my new A7RIV one week ago and here are my first impressions for still photography: 1/ Ergonomics : This new body get closer to a real professional one than its predecessors. Many comments have already been made on that, so I shall not dig in. I just can witness that the improvement is real in many aspects and it is a pleasure to use this new body. Some weaknesses such as the fuzzy menus are still there but fortunately you can customize your functions. 2/ The 61MP sensor : - Sharpness and level of details is outstanding ! The gain compared to the A7RIII is clearly visible. Having said that, compared to the A7RIII, with 45% more megapixels on the A7RIV you will get a size increase of the image (cropped at 100%) of "just" around 20%. I do often print on A2 or A1 formats papers (300 ppp) and I welcome this additional capacity. For some of you, it might be of no use and the A7RIII remains an excellent choice. A word on the pixelshift : I tried it with the 16 shots option. I was not so much impressed by this option with the A7RIII, but, with the A7RIV, it is crazy ! The picture is much bigger than the basic uncompressed raw one . At 100% crop, you can print a perfectly sharp and detailed 63 X 42 inches picture ! Of course, the use is limited to scenes where nothing moves. I shall use it, among others, when shooting in museums. Despite its extremely good performance, the A7RIV cannot be compared to a medium format camera and I do not like the Sony marketing on this. A medium format body has a bigger sensor which means (for the same pixels count) less diffraction, shallower DOF, etc..and all in all a better image quality. But there is a price for that : very expensive, bulky and heavy bodies and lenses, and a much less versatile system. - In order to get the best from this new 61 MP sensor, you need the very best lenses. I did test my own gear (made of mainly Sony GM lenses) and also some other gear of my friends. The 61 MP sensor does not forgive anything. With no surprise the GM lenses were fine. With other brands, the results are uneven : a good result for example with the Voigtlander 110mm Macro, less good results with the Zeiss Loxia series. Let's remember that with such a high megapixel sensor diffraction comes earlier when you stop down. (By the way, I think it is strange to see lens manufacturers (including Sony) still selling lenses with a 22 minimum aperture). - Noise : I found that the noise comes earlier than with the A7RIII when you increase your ISO setting (beyond 800 ISO). On my side I do not care since shooting mainly landscapes and portraits, I always try to stick to low ISOs. - In Body Image Stabilization : good surprise ! the performance is very good with this demanding 61MP sensor and you really can shoot hand held at relatively low shutter speeds. Having said that, the A7RIV seems more sensitive to shake than its predecessors (I did see that with my 100-400 GM when shooting at 400) - Autofocus and eye/face tracking: no need to say that this new A7RIV is excellent. I am very impressed. - Color rendition : For what I have seen so far the new sensor gives warmer colors than the A7RII and III 42MP one. As a matter of conclusion : If not perfect, this new A7RIV is clearly an excellent product with a lot of potential. The 61MP sensor requires to be more patient and focussed on what you do : this is a small price to pay for getting high level pictures.
  4. would like to set my front scroll dial/wheel to ISO cant seem to change it like the back scroll is dedicated to shutter.
  5. my sony raw files when imported onto my 2017 mac desktop, do not open in photoshop when i double click on the image, rather just brings up a image preview. right hand clicking and trying to select photoshop is also not an option. also on my computer i dfont get image previews from the files and idea how i can fix this issue thanks james.
  6. The level display on the a7r4 is extremely inaccurate-- shots can need over a full degree of adjustment in both axes (axies? axis?) after the fact even when the display reads as fully leveled (all green). This basically makes the level useless for shots any straight lines in the photo (which I think is the whole point of a level???)-- my Canon cameras are all much more accurate (maybe needing .3 degrees of adjustment at most). Can this somehow be improved in firmware?? Really disappointed that a multi-thousand dollar camera is so inaccurate, and I have to waste resolution and time by having to rotate /distort images to be squared up.
  7. Hi, what should be approximately the initial file number stored on a new A7RIV? Thanks!
  8. Hi Everyone, I'm a hobbyist photographer, a few times a month I'll go out and shoot 500 photos, often time sailing regatta photos, 1 in every 10 photos is a keeper. I just upgraded from the A7rii to the a7Riv. I currently edit my pictures on a 2015 Macbook pro with 16bg of ram and the base i7 processor 256gb ssd. If I'm working remotely and do not have access to an external hard drive I often like to sort through the photos while on the card so I don't fill up the laptop hard drive for this i will use the mac preview program or sometimes lightroom. In the past this setup was barely adequate to do editing. The wait time was a couple of seconds for loading or previewing files. This is a problem when you're going through 500 photos. Like I said, I'm a hobbyist, I'm not making money off of this and waiting to load photos that need sorting and reviewing becomes a less than fun task when you're waiting on your computer. Now that I've upgraded to the A7r iv the wait times have increased but I can also tell that the computer is past its limit, I have short hangs added into the waiting time. I'm looking to build a cost effective desktop PC. I want to invest money into the parts that will mostly reduce load times and processing times. Processor: If I were to go Intel I'd be looking at an i7 or i9 with a LGA 2066 board or LGA1151. Will either socket have much of an impact on my load times. Also I've heard good things about AMD Ryzen these days but I don't know enough about them. RAM: Will 64GBs be more effective over 32GB or is that unnecessary. Also What impact will RAM Speed have DDR4 - 3000 MHZ vs DDR4 - 3333 MHZ Graphics Card: Will graphics card actually have any impact on anything because its not a video game Also What percent breakdown do each of these categories have on load times.
