Possible to fine tune noise reduction?

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks!

I'm a new a7rii owner and an new Forum member. I'm hoping I can tap the knowledge here to better understand what I've gotten myself into. :)

My question of the moment is is it possible to fine tune the amount of noise reduction that's applied to jpgs? I see in the settings for Creative Styles that one can change contrast, color and sharpness, but there's nothing for noise. Is the noise adjustment combined with sharpness maybe?

Thanks for your help with this ... more questions will come no doubt.

My a7-II is not your "R" version, but yes it is adjustable,

not "fine" adjustable ... more like grossly adjustable :-)

The rationale, I spoze, is that if you're gonna get picky,

you should process your own raw files.

The online PDF manual is much easier to use cuz PDF

docs are internally searchable. It is otherwise the very

same manual as ships with the camera. IIRC, your "R"

version menus are organized differently than my a7-II.

Whateverrrrr .... do download the PDF !

Thanks Username,

Yes, I do have the printed manual ... it seems a bit limited, frankly, but maybe the searchable pdf version will solve that. Thanks for the tip and fast response.

What provoked my question was comparing a RAW file to a high res file of the same composition and noticing the unappealing digital artifacts due to sharpening and smoothing the jpeg image.

One can only limit noise reduction for high ISO and long exposure. That's what I gathered from my previous investigation of the manual. I'm disappointed that adjustment for more typical shooting can't be made; after all, Sony provides adjustment for other parameters.

Another disappointment is the limited RAW resolution settings available - compressed and uncompressed. I really like having the large, medium and small size RAW settings in my 5D, even if it's just to squeeze more shots onto a nearly full card.

Perhaps the next version of the camera could have more choices like these available. Perhaps it could even be updated with a firmware update. :)

Smaller raw files were useful when cards were small and were

more expensive. It doesn't matter very much now. Correct you

are about the noise control adjustments being related to long

exposure and high ISO. Well, that IS where the noise issue is

most significant. I don't recall my Canons and Nikons offering

any noise reduction adjustment for general photography ... but

I don't really care about turning it down anyway. I consider use

of less-than-4-digit ISO to be my version of noise reduction, as

I tend to shoot in the dark at least in the dim. So I never looked

for it in the Canon or Nikon menus. Are you saying [above] that

the 5D has adjustable noise reduction for general photography ?

It was updated!!! Not to long ago there was _NO_ RAW settings available. Then Sony offered the uncompressed option, and at about the same time, implemented the "star eater" algorithm to remove "hot" pixels. So, about 5 people got uncompressed RAW files which they never really use ... and another 5 people had their Astro setups ruined.

Firmware updates ..... be careful what you ask for. Easier to just buy a larger SD card and a copy of Lightroom IMO    :P

Thanks for the responses, y'all. :)

Indeed, memory of all sorts is abundant and pretty cheap. To be honest I rarely use the smaller RAW modes on my 5D ... like that they're there though.

As for noise ... what I was surprised to see when comparing RAW and jpeg versions of the same scene (at 400 ISO) was that the jpeg not only was missing textures (in a wall - architecture) but had some smudgy artifacting (? sorry for the poor terminology) at the edges at the edges of planes.

I know, "just shoot in RAW." I choose to shoot jpeg when I know that I'll never print the image, that it will go to social media if anything. True, no one's going to notice the missing fine quality when looking on Instagram, Facebook or .... I guess it comes back to having the ability on my 5D (it does have 4 parameters of adjustment).

No worries, I'll get over it. :)

    • I'm beginning to think that I have a misconception about the a7R. The one I was wanting had the shutter release button on the hand grip with a resolution of 36mp. It appears the button moved to the handgrip on the a7R II model, which had 42mp resolution.  Sorry for any confusion, I'm in the learning stage yet.  😕 I may need to go with the basic a7 II at 24mp. The 36mp (R) model had the shutter release on the camera body (which I didn't care for).
    • I'd really like to find a package deal for an a7R (mk I, second generation) which includes the neckstrap and box. I've searched Ebay and currently no one is listing what I'm looking for. They either have the camera only or a first generation a7R and a lot of them don't offer the Sony neckstrap or box it came in. I know your site doesn't have a formal 'Equipment For Sale' thread and granted Ebay is a better place to sell gear but I thought I'd see if any of the members have one and would like to upgrade to a newer model but don't think anyone would be looking for one that old. The cameras I've been using are in the 20 megapixel range and rather than jumping to a 40mp camera due to file size, the 36mp that the first a7R has was appealing to me and wouldn't break the bank. I've been using Canon and Nikon but really want experience a Sony. If a post like this is undesirable for this website, I understand but I thought I would ask. Thank you.
    • Here's a good thread on the issue.... https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4571046 And here is the info on the A7RIVA that maybe explains why I don't see the issue...  The change in wording that caught my attention is that the new A7RIVA brochure says the structure has been "re-examined and redesigned." Don't know, but given the text of other parts of the brochures are copied word for word, the change in text here seems significant. My reading of this is that it is a redesign of the A7RIV. In that case, perhaps the 200-600 issues are less severe with the new body.
